King's Business - 1955-04

SUNDAY SCHOOL continued seems that there had been neglect in car ing for the sanctuary and the young king Joash was filled with a desire to restore the temple to its former condition. It was a commendable desire. Surely the house of God should not be neglected. It is a sad commentary on the state of things in the church when the members are careless of the appearance of the place of worship. Our God is a God o f order and beauty. He wants His things kept in a way harmonizing with His nature. The Supply of Needed Funds vv. 8-14 Joash conceived of the unique idea of providing a chest for the purpose of re ceiving the gifts of God’s people. It was to be placed at the gate of the temple. The people were to be told about the need and were then expected to respond, as they were able, by placing their offer ings in the chest. The plan was similar in principle to that which Moses used in connection with the construction of the tabernacle in the wilderness (cp. Ex. 35 and 36). The plan worked. The people rejoiced in it. And the result was most satisfactory. Sufficient funds were received to do the work that was contemplated. M any since the days of Joash have used the “ Joash Chest” idea in raising funds for different phases of God’s work and have found it to succeed. The prin ciple behind the idea appears in both the Old and New Testaments. God expects His children to support His work by their freew ill offerings. The grace of giving is one of the evidences of the new birth. See 2 Cor. 8:1-15; 9:6-8; 1 Cor. 16: 1, 2. I f God’s people would support His work in His w ay there would he no lack of funds for carrying on the work. Helps for the Children The Temple Treasure Chest 2 Chr. 24:1-14 MEMORY VERSE: "Bring . . . thank offer ings into the house of the Lord" (2 Chr. 29:31). Joash became king over God’s people when he was only seven years old. He was one of the kings who did that which was right in the sight of God. Joash in sisted that God’s children care for the beautiful temple each year. W icked peo ple had broken some of the temple furni ture and had given away some of the sacred dishes which were used in the worship services. Joash told the people to place a large box at the gate of the tem ple that all of the Israelites might bring their money to pay for the repairing that must be done in God’s house. Dishes of gold and silver were again made for the worship services. Joyfully the king and his people made God’s house a clean and beautiful place of worship as it had been in the past. D o you Christian boys and girls love God’s house so much that you try to help keep it clean and beautiful? God is grieved when His children throw torn papers, gum wrappers and scraps upon the floor of His house. Those who write in song books or scratch the seats are not show ing true love for God and His house.
