Thank you for changing a life!

Thank you for changing a life! Our fiscal year 2024 was a celebration of growth,

IT. We are proud to be a direct pipeline in addressing the workforce needs in our state. Over the past two years, our Excel Center in Little Rock has more than doubled its enrollment each year and graduated a record 39 students at our June ‘24 commencement. With Career Service Centers in 33 locations across the state, we provide job search and placement assistance for job seekers. For those who have been justice-involved and looking for a way to reenter society, our Reentry Services program is in 24 communities throughout Arkansas where we offer paid job training while we help remove barriers to their success. The recidivism rate in Arkansas is more than 46%. The recidivism rate for our program participants is less than 6%. These are the life-changing programs we offer here in Arkansas, all made possible because of your donations. So, if it’s a monetary donation or if you clean out your closet or your garage, know that you are clearing a path for someone’s future. So, let me say to you, thank you for changing a life!

transformation and empowerment. These words embody the essence of what we do at Goodwill. Through our programs and services, we strive to help individuals move from a place of uncertainty to a place of hope, from a place of dependency to a place of self-sufficiency. This growth is made possible through the generous donations we receive, both in tangible goods and monetary contributions. Last year alone, we accepted nearly one million total donations, which accounted for 88 percent of our revenue. These donations allow us to invest back into our educational, training, career services, and reentry programs here in Arkansas. In the last fiscal year, we provided education, training, and employment services to 7,866 individuals. Our mission services have seen even greater impact with last year’s opening of the Goodwill Training and Education Center (GTEC) in Little Rock and Springdale. These facilities house our Excel Center,

a high school for adults, and The Academy, a trade school offering certifications in fields such as welding, construction, healthcare, business, and

Graduate of the Year JO WILSON MYRICK

The Graduate of the Year is awarded to an outstanding person who completed a Goodwill program, is competitively employed outside of Goodwill, and who overcame barriers to attain and maintain employment. Jo Wilson Myrick’s life hit rock bottom at the age of 35 when she was incarcerated during a battle with drug addiction. Upon reentering society, she found it difficult to find employment, even after previously working for a number of law firms. Eventually, a friend recommended Goodwill’s Transitional Employment Opportunity (TEO)

Program in 2014 where she found support, acceptance, and the tools needed to turn her life around. As a TEO graduate, she is now referring people to the same program that helped get her life back on track. She currently serves as the staffing supervisor for Operation Restore at City Connect, a faith-based

organization connecting the church and city to fulfill needs in Little Rock. Her organization serves those individuals coming out of drug and alcohol rehab and those coming out of prison. “Goodwill supported me, loved on me and never once did I feel less than anyone in Goodwill Industries. They built that confidence back up and opened many doors for me. They were part of my recovery journey where my life really began to take off and I’m very grateful.”

Employer of the Year CARGILL Located in Springdale, Arkansas, Cargill is a family company providing food, ingredients, agricultural solutions and industrial products to nourish the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way. Community Partner of the Year FAULKNER COUNTY DRUG COURT so their customers can succeed, and communities and people prosper. Cargill is a company who contributes to furthering Goodwill’s mission by providing employment opportunities to our clients to help them achieve independence and workplace advancement. Last year, our Employer of the Year hired more Goodwill clients than any other employer in the state. Community partners are vital to the success of Goodwill’s mission. The Community Partner of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding organization that has contributed to the advancement of Goodwill’s mission of changing lives through education, training and employment. In Faulkner County, Judge Chuck Clawson presides over the Drug Court Program which is a specialty court focusing on nonviolent drug offenders. Through their referrals of individuals to our TEO Reentry program, Goodwill can provide them with the training and help they need to successfully reenter the workforce. VIDEO

Achiever of the Year MELVIN WILLIAMS

The Frank Lyon, Jr. Achiever of the Year recipient is awarded to an individual employed by Goodwill and serves as a role model and inspiration for recipients of services in the Goodwill family. They must also show determination toward overcoming the barriers in their employment. Melvin Williams came from a family where education wasn’t a priority. Athletics and just getting “a job” were more important than having “a career.” When a football injury in high school derailed his dream of becoming a college and future professional athlete, he spiraled without much hope

regarding a future working career. He then dropped out of high school and bounced from job to job. Melvin married at age 24 and had three children at home. Encouraged by his wife Symone, Melvin enrolled at The Excel Center ® in October of 2017 and ultimately became one of the first Excel Center graduates in Arkansas in 2019.

VIDEO

The Excel Center ® not only provided Melvin with a diploma, but it also gave him hope and a new trajectory for his future. It gave him confidence to change the mindset of his entire family and transform the way his children would view him. They are now witnesses to Melvin’s courage, commitment and determination which will create generational transformation. He took full advantage of the opportunities presented and he thrives with a new direction in life. Melvin now serves as the recruitment and retention specialist at The Excel Center ® . Melvin is instrumental in helping others on that same journey through The Excel Center ® .

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas (GIA) partnered with viral internet duo Toasters ‘N’ Moose, of “Taste the Biscuit” video fame, to write and record a new song and music video, “Take Me Thriftin’”. Toasters (Estelle Piper) ‘N’ Moose (Tom Shaw), a fictional 70’s pop duo, exploded on the internet with the performance of the song, “Taste the Biscuit” from the 2010 mockumentary, “Chicken in the Shadows”, written and produced by Vincent Gargiulo. A resurgence of the song in October 2022 resulted in “Taste the Biscuit” racking up tens-of-millions of views, shares and endless remixes making them one of the most popular social media darlings in history. The song was filmed in a now-closed California thrift store prompting thousands of comments from fans suggesting it was filmed in a Goodwill location or that they should do a tour of Goodwill stores across the nation. GIA hosted Toasters ‘N’ Moose, along with Gargiulo, to tour several Goodwill stores across Arkansas that included Little Rock, Springdale and Batesville, to record the music video and a longer-length mockumentary. The unpublicized tour was tagged the Groovin’ with Goodwill Recycled Rhythms Take Me Thriftin’ Goodwill Tour. The mockumentary continues a storyline related to their 2010 film “Chicken in the Shadows” which introduced the world to Toasters ‘N’ Moose and “Taste the Biscuit.”

On the last day of filming, a nine-second clip was released on social media and within 36 hours, there were 1.5 million views on TikTok and 1 million views on Instagram. To date, collectively those views have now topped 12 million on social media platforms. Goodwill later hosted Toasters ‘N’ Moose live at the West Markham store in Little Rock for the debut of the song and mockumentary. The store remained open to customers and was transformed with a stage and seating to accommodate guests. As a result of its creativity and success, GIA won a platinum Hermes Creative Award and platinum MarCom Award.

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas celebrated its 2nd Annual Gala for Good, a remarkable evening showcasing the inspiring achievements of program participants, graduates, and community partners. Presented by Bank OZK and co-chaired by longtime Goodwill supporters Elizabeth and Tom Small, this signature fundraising event was a resounding success. The gala, held at the Wally Allen Ballroom in Little Rock’s Statehouse Convention Center, featured a delightful mix of entertainment and philanthropy. Attendees were treated to a plated dinner, signature cocktails, and thrilling live and silent auctions. The highlight of the evening was a performance by the internationally acclaimed “Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience,” hailed by the New York Daily News as “The world’s top Michael Jackson Tribute Band.” VIDEO Most importantly, the event raised more than $260,000 reinforcing the community’s commitment to Goodwill’s mission. These funds will provide vital support for Goodwill’s programs, offering life-changing opportunities in education, training and employment to individuals striving to better their lives, families, and communities.

In December of 2023, we opened our second Goodwill Training and Education Center (GTEC), this one in Little Rock. The Excel Center and The Academy, both of which have been located at the Scott Hamilton headquarters, were consolidated into one area to better serve the students and the community. “This campus will allow us to be more efficient and effective in the delivery of our mission of changing lives through education, training and employment in Central Arkansas,” said GIA President and CEO Brian Marsh. “Many of our Excel graduates move immediately into The Academy to earn certifications and credentials that will lead them to meaningful employment in the state’s top industries. With GTEC campuses located in Little Rock and Springdale, we have become a viable pipeline for skilled workers to help address the workforce shortages in Arkansas.” Marsh added, “Our strategic plan includes replicating the GTEC model around the state to unlock opportunities and better empower communities in order to thrive.” The GTEC facility will also offer a new Opportunity Center where community partners can

work from a shared space to offer their expertise in different services to the public, Goodwill employees and students. From financial institutions to health care providers, this will allow Goodwill to remove even more barriers to the people served through the GIA mission services.

Recycling and Sustainability GIA Says Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic Bags In a bold move towards environmental stewardship, we eliminated single-use plastic bags across all retail stores in the fall 2024. This initiative will prevent nearly 3.5 million plastic bags from entering landfills annually, significantly reducing waste and protecting wildlife. “By transitioning to reusable bags, our customers become true partners in our journey to protect the environment,” said Brian Marsh, GIA President and CEO. To support this transition, GIA began offering branded reusable bags for purchase at checkout and encourages customers to bring their own reusable bags. GIA Receives Arkansas Recycling Coalition Community Involvement Award The Arkansas Recycling Coalition (ARC) presented GIA with the Community Involvement Award during the Arkansas Recycling Coalition’s 33rd Annual Conference & Trade Show. Each year this educational event attracts many professionals in the reduce, reuse, recycle and sustainability field from around the state and nation. This award honors a company/agency/association who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of waste reduction, recycling, and sustainability in Arkansas over the past year.
