. •. but by me” (John 14:6). Yet It Is "easy" (Matt 11:30). — 1,000 Tales Worth Telling, by Pickering. The Son Who Was Not Welcomed M atthbw 21:17 to 22:14 MEMORY VERSE: “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Ex. 20:12). APPROACH: Last week we talked about why we are precious in God’s sight The reason is that we were

all who wanted to accept Chrst to do so. The girls were very happy when John accepted Christ as his Saviour. Mrs. Nail was invited to church, but she always excused herself by saying £hat Sunday was her only day to do as she wished, and that she wanted to read her magazines and books. Here she is with her head ir. a magazine. The mag net pulls her, but she will not let go of the magazine. Mr. Nail worked hard all week, and when Sunday came, he went to the country and played golf. Here he is tied to a golf stick. (Vary the sport represented, according to different lo calities.) It was foolish for him to let golf keep him away from the house of God where he could have learned about Jesus Christ. The young people were happy to know that their church was to have evange listic meetings. They at last persuaded their parents to go. Fatner Nail de cided that a day of pleasure could not be compared with the peace and joy he would have in Christ. Mrs. Nail de cided that she would no longer let her Sunday reading keep her from the greatest joy in life—that of knowing Christ. Here they are near the cross. What a happy family they must he! 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great com* mandment. 39 And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself* 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. LESSON TEXT : Matt. 22:15-22, 34-40. GOLDEN TEXT : «Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matt. 22:39). DEVOTIONAL READING: Rom. 13:8-14. Outline and Exposition I. G ood C itizens (15-22) P LOTTING e v i l against the Lord The Pharisees were the theologians among the Jews, and the Herodians formed the political party. They de tested each other, but joined in their mutual hatred of Jesus. “Entangle” is the word used of trappers when they set a snare for wild beasts. But these schemers were caught in their own trap, for they admitted they knew Christ was true, that He taught the truth of God, and that He spoke with out partiality. They knew all this; then why did they not believe Him? Alas! there are many men who know the truth concerning our Lord, but who, like these Pharisees and Herodians, close their minds to its saving power.

had said, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). She felt the Holy Spirit drawing her to Jesus, just as this magnet draws the nail, and she accepted Christ as her Saviour. Mary was an older sister. She was tired when Sunday morning came, and she just remained in bed. The magnet pulls her, but she still stays in bed. But when she heard more about Jesus and His great love, she, too, accepted Him as Saviour. John, an older brother, was traveling with a wild crowd. Here he is with his head in a bottle. He was deeply im pressed with the new life which Nancy and Mary were living. The girls invited him to church and he went. When the minister told about the Lord Jesus and His death for a lost world, he invited MATTHBW 22:15 Then went the Phari sees, and tools counsel how they might entangle him in his talk* 16 And they' sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying» Master» we know that thou art true» and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any mans for thou regard- est not the person of men» 17 Tell us therefore. What thlnkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? . 18 But Jesus perceived their wicked ness» and said» Why tempt ye me» ye hypocrites? 19 Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them« Whose Is this image and superscription? 21 They say unto him, Caesar’s» Then saith he 17 & 0 them. Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s i and unto God the things that are God’s. 22 When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way. 34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35 Then one of them, which was a law yer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying* 36 Master, which is the great com mandment in the law? bought with a price —the price of the death of God’s Son. And God tells us, in H is Wo r d , that there is no way to come to Him except by coming through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. LESSON STORY: When J e s u s was

here on earth, He told the people that He alone was “the way, the truth, and the life” and that “no one” should come “unto the Father” except by Him. He told them a story which should help to explain it. This was the story: There was once a man who planted a vineyard, and he gave it to some men to take care of, and he, himself, went into a far country. When it was time for the grapes to be ripe, the man sent his servants to the vineyard to bring back to him the gathered fruit. But the men he had left in charge took the servants and beat some and killed an other. The owner sent again, and again the men in charge did the same. Then the owner sent his son, saying to him self, "They will reverence my son.” But the men in charge saw the son coming and said among themselves, something like this: “Let us kill the son and divide the vineyard among our- • selves.” And they did this very thing. Then the owner himself came home. And what would he do? Yes, he would de stroy the wicked men and put others in charge. God has left us, His people, on this earth to take care of it for Him. He sent prophets and teachers to explain His wishes to us, and at last He sent His Son. Do we receive God’s Son into our hearts, or do we reject Him? The Lord Jesus tells us in this story what will happen if we do not receive Him.
