The Integrity Commissioner of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) has cleared Township of Russell Mayor Pierre Leroux and Casselman Mayor Geneviève Lajoie following a complaint about a heated exchange with a delegation at the 2023 UCPR meeting. Integrity Commissioner Jean-Jacques -BDPNCFSFDFJWFEBDPNQMBJOUJO/PWFNCFS 2023 regarding a verbal exchange between a Russell Township resident and Mayors Leroux and Lajoie at a UCPR council meeting in August 2023. Although not mentioned in the Integrity Commissioner’s report, the resident, Rhonda Bradley, presented a request to council on that date for improved communications between the UCPR, Russell Township and residents. Les commentaires de la ministre sur- viennent alors que certains exploitants de garderies en Ontario et en Alberta préviennent qu’ils pourraient se retirer du programme, voire être forcés de fermer complètement, s’ils n’obtiennent pas plus de fonds de fonctionnement. Les libéraux fédéraux ont prévu un budget
de 30 milliards $ sur cinq ans pour mettre en place progressivement le programme de garderies, avec pour objectif de créer des milliers de places payantes à 10$ par jour d’ici 2026. Chaque province et territoire a signé un accord avec Ottawa pour gérer le programme en échange d’argent fédéral pour aider à le financer. La ministre des Finances, Chrystia Free- land, a déclaré qu’il s’agissait d’une somme d’argent considérable et qu’Ottawa restait déterminé à faire en sorte que les services de garde d’enfants fonctionnent. Mme Freeland n’a pas laissé entendre que cet engagement impliquerait de mettre encore plus d’argent sur la table.
