Marilyn Sherman , CSP, CPAE Front-Row Leadership Expert & Hall of Fame Speaker Grab your seat in the front row to learn about how people default to one of three mindsets when faced with change. If you are a Victim to change, you feel and act like people are out to get you and you take change personally. If you are a Vacationer, you are disengaged and wait for others to make the conversions necessary. If you are a Volunteer, you are totally engaged, ask good questions, and are resourceful in making the change a success. Take away strategies to manage Victims and Vacationers, and help your team become Volunteers to navigate change and ensure success.

PresidenTalks Are You a Futurist?

If not, you probably should be. That’s because many of the traits of a successful futurist mirror those of someone that is successful in hospitality L&D. I recently heard a keynote by Jason Averbook, and he talked about the qualities of a futurist, which included things like inherent curiosity, adaption to change, and innovation. Can you think of someone successful in our space that doesn’t have these qualities? A futurist is an individual who specializes in studying and predicting future trends, developments, and changes across various fields. Futurists use a combination of analytical skills, knowledge of

Damian Hanft

current events, and an understanding of historical patterns to make informed predictions about what the future might hold. The goal is to anticipate and prepare for potential shifts in technology, society, economics, and other areas.

While you may not explicitly identify as a futurist, you probably naturally engage in futurist thinking. Part of being a futurist is identifying patterns. When you think back to training that has been successful, and times that it hasn’t been successful, I’m sure that you’re naturally thinking about commonalities and patterns in each. And, one of the great things about CHART is that you can pick up on larger patterns happening across the industry (think Ask My Peers or networking at a conference). Speculating about potential future scenarios helps us make sense of why things worked (or didn’t work) and helps us understand how to adapt to change. I can think of many of my colleagues and CHART members that have used the power of networking to brainstorm about how to approach a challenge and scenarios to solve it. And, the resources of CHART help us and our teams to continue to innovate and bring value to our organizations. So, are you a futurist? Thinking like a futurist will help you shape your training to be successful. Best Wishes,

Meet Your Charlotte Conference Team These volunteers are working hard to craft OUR Charlotte conference experience. To get to know THEM a bit better, we asked them “What in your career never seemed like a possibility, that actually came to be?”

Volunteer Co-Director Nicole Echelard Manager of Training & Development, Heritage Restaurant Brands “I have worked in the restaurant industry my entire career, and training quickly became a goal of mine to become a part of. It was an absolute dream when I was given an opportunity to join an incredible brand and take on a role in Training and Development. This role has been all I hoped for and even more! Being in a position in which you get to listen, coach, train, and impact those you work with feeds the desire to do more every day! Trying to find ways to improve the experiences for our team members, and in turn our guests, is an absolute joy! I am grateful to be given this opportunity and hope to only continue to build from here.” Service Event Co-Director Christina Heilig Learning & Development Manager, Dewey’s Pizza “When leaving K-12 teaching, I never imagined that an entire world of mostly remote learning and development work experiences, networking, university teaching, and volunteering would be possible (and so fulfilling).”

Registration Co-Director Domenic Bartolini

Field Training Manager, Buffalo Wild Wings “I never thought I would land a career that challenges me every day, rewards me in ways I can’t even count, and keeps me excited and engaged with the brand I support! What an amazing time to be working in our industry.” Registration Co-Director Elisa Cain Senior Sales Manager, Restaurant and Food Service Industry, ServSafe “When I first started selling to foodservice (selling coffee and salad dressings for Sara Lee), someone told me ‘Once you are in foodservice, you will never leave foodservice!’ I didn’t believe them… and that was 30 years ago! I love this industry!” Service Event Co-Director Alfredo Ramirez Learning & Development Manager, Hornblower Group “Having initially worked in higher education, a career shift into corporate hospitality training never seemed to be a possibility for me. Yet, the experience has been nothing short of fulfilling. The transition opened doors to exciting projects, immense personal and professional growth, and introduced me to amazing individuals who have enriched my life.”
