2023 3rd Quarter - Crimes Against Persons Crimes Against Persons increased 1.5% overall in the Third Quarter of 2023 compared to the Third Quarter of 2022. There were decreases in human trafficking, murder, and nonnegligent manslaughter. There was an increase in forcible rape.

In the Third Quarter of 2023, homicide offenses decreased 15.6% with 27 homicide victims compared to 32 in the Third Quarter of 2022.

Eight of the 27 incidents had an unknown motive, five incidents were robberies, (four of the five robberies were narcotics related), five incidents were arguments/fights, three were domestic, three were gang related, one was reckless/negligence, one had an other motive, and one was random. The three gang related homicides were a triple homicide.

Twenty of the 27 homicides have been filed. Suspects have been identified in 22 of the offenses.

Six homicides occurred in Council District 11, four in Council District 3, three each in Council Districts 5, 6, and 9. Two each in Council Districts 2, 4, and 8, and one each in Council Districts 7 and 10.

20 of the 27 homicides were by a firearm.

Homicide Prevention Strategies FWPD ’ s homicide prevention strategies involve various partnerships. Neighborhood Police Officers, the Victim Assistance Section, and One Safe Place provide outreach services to prevent domestic violence crimes that have the potential to turn into a homicide. In addition, the Homicide Unit works closely with the Crime Lab as policies have changed allowing for more timely entry of ballistic intelligence into the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm's (ATF) National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) to more readily identify persons who may be involved in violent offenses. The Homicide Unit also continues to work with members of the Gang, Narcotics, and Robbery Units where other criminal activity may elevate to homicide.
