H ave you ever wondered why you are saved? There is one basic reason why you and I are in the world today. If we are believers, it is that we may give a witness for the Saviour. This witness is not only to be given in word alone, but also to be shown by our works. “I can’t hear what you say, be cause what you do speaks so loudly”, is the modem way to put it. The Bible gives us the specific and compelling reason for this as we read, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). The Greek word for workmanship sug gests that we are His poetic master piece. To the Greek mind the greatest work that ever could be conceived was a poem. Poetry was the supposed lang uage of the gods. There were great works in philosophy, music, drama, arts and sculpture. But the greatest work of art was that of poetry. Paul, in order to indicate God’s greatest work, uses this word to suggest His masterpiece. When you think of how God made and then recreated a redeemed soul in Jesus Christ, we catch a small fraction of this truth. The verse teaches us that God has prepared the good works for us. We must be sure to understand that these good works will never merit salvation for us. They are rather a result of our salvation, because we have been made in the likeness and image of God. So we are to do those things which will give a testimony to the world that we are no longer merely sons of men but now we are the sons of God. “Ac cording as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame befpre him in love” (Ephesians 1:4). The purpose of our election is that we might be a holy people, set apart for God. The word “holy” is also very in teresting. It comes from a root clearly meaning “to separate unto”.
