pen and paper, so the story goes, and wrote down the names of people. She was at it for a fu ll two hours. Final ly her lawyer said, “My, that looks like an unusually long will.” She looked up rather petulantly and shot back, “Will? Who’s writing a will? I’m making out a list of the people 1 want to bite!” If nothing else, this does indeed illustrate the fact that hatred and ill-w ill are certainly twin evils that must be ruled out of the hearts of all of God’s people. “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are seeded . . . and let all bitterness . . . and evil speak ing, be put away from you!’ To realize the worth of the anchor we need to feel the stress of the storm. PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE It is interesting to study the var ious religions of the world arid to see how all of them, except true Chris tianity", stress the point of “achiev ing.” Salvation, however, according to the Word of God, is based upon “believing.” A perplexed woman stopped a preacher after the church service arid said, “I disagree with you! You declare that the blood of Jesus Christ washes awcey all our sins, and that He died for a ll of them. Now I believe that Christ died for my past sins, but that 1 have to take care of the f u t u r e sins.” The minister smiled and kind ly responded, “Let me ask you a question. How many of your sins were past when Jesus died?” A startled look came to the woman’s face. Then she began to brighten, “Why, they were all future! 1 had n o past sins when Jesus died.” The minister made his point. “That means that Christ died for all your sins before you committed them, past, present and future. No sin can keep you out of heaven because all have been paid for.” And that’s ex actly what the Word of God means when we read in Colossians 2:13, “And you, being dead in your sins

and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together w ith him, having forgiven you all trespasses.” * Hardships will make a person eith er bitter or better. RIPPLES OF TROUBLE A boy had made a beautiful little boat and gleefully went to sail it in the water. He forgot, however, to hold on to the string and it floated beyond his reach. He began to cry when a teenager came by. Seeing his distress he picked up a few stones seeming to throw them at the boat. This upset the lad and he cried all the more. Amid his tears, how ever, shortly he saw that instead of hitting the boat each stone was di rected beyond it making a small ripple which moved the vessel a lit tle nearer to the shore. Every stone tossed was planned. Soon the treas ured little vessel came back to the harbor for its waiting master. Some times in our lives things seem dis agreeable without sense or plan. If God sends the wave of trouble and trial that He may bring us nearer to Himself, may we accept the ex hortation of Scripture and set our affections on things above not on things of this earth.
