THE DANGER FROM WITHIN Amid the storms of life which batter the individual daily, the greater danger comes not so much from the enticements of the world about us, but rather from the weak ness of the flesh within. Victor Hugo tells the story of the ship at sea which had successfully met and conquered an enemy in a certain naval engagement. A few hours later, however, the ship itself was tossed into an angry gale, and placed in greater peril. For from below the deck could be heard the tremen dous thundering noise as the ship’s cannon was tossed to and fro, batter ing the sides of the vessel. The cap tain, realizing that this heavy weight could easly destroy his ship, him self went into the hold and at great risk of his own life tied down the cannon so that it could not move. Just so the old man w ithin us would constantly batter the spiritual as pects of our lives. Yet how wonderful to know that, when we by faith re ceive the Lord Jesus Christ as Sav iour, we have a power much greater than the force of evil. For the Word of God tells us, Greater is he that is in us, Christ, than he that is in the world. “Wherefore if God be for us who can be against us?” •k * * To measure the self importance of a man, stick a finger into a pan of water, and when you pull it out, see the hole that's left. * * * LIFE'S DRUDGERY Have you ever felt that life was merely a long succession of endless drudgery? Maybe that is the way it seems today. Two men had been dig ging holes most of the day. Each one was to be five feet deep, yet, after every hole had been dug, the fore man looked at it, and then gave the strange order, “Fill it up.” In time, the men decided they had had enough. They went straight to the boss and announced, “We quit. No one’s going to make fools of us going
around making holes, then filling them up again, even if we are get ting paid for it.” But then came the explanation. The blue prints for the water mains in that part of town had been lost. They had to do it this way to find the proper pipes. So again, the men went back to work realizing that drudgery can be en dured if it has a purpose behind it. If all of what we do is for the glori fication of our Lord Jesus Christ, if it is a means by which we may lead someone to the Saviour, then by serving in a menial task and do ing something which may seem to have no earthly reward at the mo ment, in this manner we are able to serve God most effectively. “Whatso ever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might.” * * * There is no right way to do a wrong thing! * * * NO CHARGE FOR COUNSEL No one need be reminded of the rising costs which are noted on every hand. People in every area share the same experience. The story is told of a rather frugal man who went to see a fortune teller for the first time. He inquired as to the fee charged for. consultation. The me dium explained that her minimum fee was $25.00, and that for that amount, he was allowed to ask two questions of his own choosing. The fellow asked rather incredulously, “Isn’t that pretty high for just two questions?” The medium replied, “Yes, it is! And now, what’s your second question?” Seriously, it is wonderful to know that we need not consult familiar spirits or such fan tasies, but that, at no cost to us, we have an Advocate, One to whom we can go.” “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5). “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall di rect thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
