Sofitel Girls Day Out

Robert Cram

END OF AN ERA

A remarkable journey within the industry came to a close in July, with Robert Cram’s retirement, concluding a distinguished 41-year career dedicated to ensuring the integrity of horse racing as Racing Victoria’s Chairman of Stewards. He will be honoured today with a race named after him on Sofitel Girls’ Day Out called the Robert Cram Sprint (1100m). Commencing his career as a Cadet Stipendiary Steward with the Victoria Racing Club in 1982, Cram gradually climbed the ranks, overseeing stewardship roles in different regions of Victoria. He directed the state’s apprentice jockey training program from 1991 to 1996 and his tenure as Senior Stipendiary Steward in 1996 culminated in his appointment as Deputy Chairman of Stewards – Non Raceday Integrity and Compliance in 2005. Cram briefly served as Manager – Integrity Services in 2008 before returning to the Deputy Chairman position in 2010. In 2018, he assumed the role of Chairman of Stewards after Terry Bailey’s departure to Singapore, becoming a pivotal figure in the industry. Hailing from a racing family in country Victoria, Cram emphasised his lifelong commitment to the sport, stating, “I hold great respect for the thoroughbred horse and have been fortunate to never feel reluctant to go to work.” A significant part of Cram’s legacy was his role in overseeing the Melbourne Cup Carnival, ensuring racing adhered to the strictest rules and regulations. His retirement signifies the end of an illustrious career dedicated to upholding racing’s integrity. We extend our gratitude for his service and wish him the best in his retirement.
