WE LOVE GIVING BACK! Our Community Means the World to Us

Hello everyone! My name is Madison, and I am the Office Manager here at Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants. Dr. Derik and Dr. Chris wanted me to write this month to talk about one of my favorite things: giving back to our community! Myself, our doctors, and the rest of our team value our patients and community so much — and we give back to others whenever we can. Reaching out and giving back can do wonders for those around you. You never know what others are going through, so being able to lend a helping hand and show kindness can turn their entire day (and even lives) around.

and make the office we all know and love. But Dr. Derik wanted to offer other dental services to our community because he understood how nerve-wracking it can be to visit multiple dentist offices for various services. When you don’t have a relationship with your doctor, it can be challenging to voice your concerns about your health — it’s such a vulnerable topic! But by providing multiple services to our patients, you don’t need to worry about finding another dentist’s office to perform other procedures or go through the process of meeting a new doctor. At Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants, we care for all your dental and hygiene needs!

We recently had our ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 31, and seeing many of your smiling faces at the event was a pleasure. Thank you for coming out and celebrating with us! This event represented a rebranding for the office — we are evolving and excited to take you along this journey with us. One of the things we will incorporate into our practice moving forward is to be more involved within our community. In the past, we’ve networked with outreach agencies and nonprofit organizations and donated toothbrushes and other hygiene products to those in need. We plan to do more activities like this and volunteer at our local soup kitchens, food drives, shelters, and much more. Be on the lookout for upcoming events in the future!

On top of that, we’ve also created a comfortable environment for our patients when they visit us. Sitting in a room with white walls, bright lights, and hearing the buzz of fluorescent lights can add to your fears or anxiety about the dentist. But that’s where we stand out — our office has posters, reading material, and light music. We also

provide amenities to patients, such as blankets and pillows, to provide extra comfort during your visit. But most importantly, we show our visitors that we care. You’re more than a patient to us; you’re a part of our family. We care about

“On top of connecting and reaching out to those in our community, the other way we give back to others is through dentistry.”

your health and other life experiences — we love connecting with you during your exams! Most of our patients know everyone on our team on a first-name basis, and I think that’s unique. We are a family and will do anything to give back to you, make you feel comfortable, and ensure your oral health is on the right track.

Dr. Chris and Dr. Derik are passionate about making dental services accessible to everyone. That’s one of the reasons why Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants offers all kinds of dental services. We can provide implants and have an in-house lab to perform teeth cleanings, Invisalign, fillings, sealants, bridges, extractions, crowns, veneers, and much more.

Thank you for taking this journey with us! We’re so excited for what the future holds for you and us!

Before Dr. Derik created Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants, our area lacked the ability to provide implants. So, he decided to fill that gap

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DENTA

3 Factors That Determi

Over the past few months, we’ve highlighted the information you need to know about dental implants. We’ve discussed what they are, their benefits, how they differ from dentures, why people choose dental implants, the procedure process, how to care for them, and signs if they are infected. However, we haven’t discussed what makes a good candidate for dental implants. While dental implants can help you if you recently lost a tooth, you must meet a few requirements. Here are three factors we look for when determining whether or not you’re a good candidate for dental implants. 1. HEALTHY GUMS For your implants to remain secure, it needs support from your gums and surrounding teeth. You want your gums to appear pink and unyielding to the touch. Aside from where you’re missing a tooth, you also don’t want your gums to be overly sensitive. We will also look over your teeth to ensure you have healthy teeth surrounding the spot where the missing tooth was. 2. STRONG JAWBONE A strong and healthy jawbone is vital because dental implants are drilled into the bone. If your jawbone is too weak, the implant won’t be secure

SMILE! Your Body Will Thank You

For some people, their teeth might be the part of their body they’re most insecure about. And this insecurity, whether purposeful or not, can prevent people from smiling openly when they’re happy, excited, proud, or just being silly. You may be thinking, “Okay, and? It’s not like smiling is necessary to survive,” but in some ways, it is. It turns out that smiling is an integral part of our health, and when we miss out on those big grins because we’re embarrassed, our health suffers. If you’re wondering how it works, here are four ways smiling benefits our health. SMILING MAKES YOU FEEL LESS STRESSED. Research shows that when you smile, even if it isn’t genuine, your heart rate decreases, and you feel less stressed. Participants in one blind study

who used chopsticks to keep their mouths in the smiling position reported having better recovery during a stressful task than those whose mouths were in a neutral position. SMILING REDUCES DEPRESSION. When you smile, your body releases “happy” neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, and research shows that the intent of the smile doesn’t matter. Meaning, you can trick your body into releasing hormones that make you feel better just by smiling! SMILING BOOSTS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. As happy neurotransmitters release into your body, your cortisol levels drop. Cortisol, the stress hormone, actively suppresses your immune system to keep your body in its “fight or flight”

mode. So when you feel happier and less stressed, your immune system has the resources to function correctly and keep you healthy. SMILING REDUCES PAIN. Those handy happy neurotransmitters your brain releases also act as natural painkillers; serotonin, in particular, is one of the most powerful. And when you grin, your body also releases endorphins, which are opioid peptides. If the word opioid sounds familiar, it’s because it is the medication class many popular prescription painkillers fall into. So, smiling is a natural way to relieve pain without medication. If your teeth insecurity stops you from smiling, you’re missing out on many natural health benefits. Talk to your dentist today to find a resolution that will leave you happy and healthy!

THE ORIGINAL RAP BATTLES

the F-bomb. Low-brow and crass, these speedy insults were simply too entertaining for even kings and queens to ignore. How Disses Became Poetry If you’re wondering what exactly these two “gentlemen” were saying, we’d have to admit that it would be difficult to quote without including expletives and curses. However, one tame section can be shared here. Dunbar reportedly insulted Kennedie by saying:

Long before diss tracks, rap battles, and “yo mama” jokes, there was medieval “flyting.” Defined as

quick exchanges of witty insults, these poetic slights were popular in England and Scotland from the 5th to 16th century. Insulting someone in verse took immense effort and quick wits, and they were undoubtedly a performance you didn’t want to miss.

Despite crude language and below-the-belt potshots, flyting became entertainment for royals and was dubbed “court flyting.” While these jests are not well-documented, one flyting event made history. The iconic exchange known as “The Flyting of Dunbar

Maggoty mutton, gorged glutton, scurrilous certain heir to Hillhouse,

Rank beggar, oyster-dredger, dismal debtor on the lawn, Lily-livered, soul-shivered, cheap as slivers in the millhouse, Bard baiter, thief of nature, false traitor, devil’s spawn. While these amusing fights were a form of entertainment, men also used them to influence the courts and improve their social profile while lowering others. So, as you can imagine, flyting could get intense (similar to rap battles and heated diss tracks).

and Kennedie” occurred in the early 16th century between William Dunbar and Walter Kennedie. The two were performing their court flyting for the Scottish King James IV. Both men were known for their intellect and clever nature, and their flyting did not disappoint. This famous dialogue featured two firsts: using fecal matter as an insult and dropping
