APPRECIATION FOR MY DAD The Greatest Role Model I Could Ask For

Each of us has certain people who heavily influence our lives. They are usually incredibly close to us, and in most cases, they’re someone we have known throughout our lives: a parent, sibling, best friend, spouse, or mentor. Their influence can be felt in nearly everything we do, think, and feel, from how we act to our ideologies about work and our actions while raising our children. My dad is one of the greatest influences on my life and has been one of my primary role models for as long as I can remember. I’m blessed to have such amazing and loving parents, and my dad really goes above and beyond to show he cares about people. He is a constant reminder of the importance of showing generosity and graciousness to others. It seems like he’s always thinking three or four steps ahead when determining how he can help people. I see this all the time whenever we visit. Before we leave my parents’ house to head back home, my dad grabs

our keys and takes our car to the gas station to fill it up for our road trip home. He’s always doing simple things like that, and it inspires me to act in a similar fashion. He hasn’t solely given me lessons in generosity; both my parents have also greatly encouraged my love for the outdoors. I grew up hiking, camping, and exploring, which became a huge part of my identity. We camped yearly in Yosemite, and I grew to love it so much that I take my kids there every year. In addition to shaping me into who I am today, my dad is responsible for shaping me as a business owner. He was an electrical engineer who designed circuit boards and ran his own business, which taught me it’s possible to start a business and find success. When I was young, I spent hours in the living room helping him stuff mailers, which helped me develop a strong work ethic. My dad firmly believes in giving his all to every project he starts. He wants to do a good job and takes great pride in his work. He always said that if you were going to do something, you should do it well. That lesson has stuck with me over the years, and I’m ensuring my kids learn it, too. These values of pride, dedication, and a strong work ethic are a part of who I am and play a vital role in my business. I want to lead a business I can be proud of and know we’re doing everything in our power to help our clients. Of the many lessons my dad taught me, the one that stands out the most is the importance of sticking to your word because your word is your bond. It’s how I live my life and run my practice. If I say I’m going to do something, I will do it.

My father is an incredibly influential person and a big reason I’m the way I am. I’m so thankful for him and all the lessons he taught me over the years.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

New developments are always occurring with the team here at Shoup Legal, and this month, we have some exciting news to share with you. Our estate planning assistant, Kelli, got married this past February. It was a fun-filled event full of laughter, smiles, and joy that Kelli and her new husband will remember for the rest of their lives. To honor the grand occasion, we want to share some highlights of the event as well as some background on Kelli and Tyler’s relationship. Tyler was Kelli’s best friend’s roommate. The two had met on several occasions but never really spent time with one another. Eventually, Kelli’s best friend felt the two would be a perfect match and encouraged them to date. Tyler asked for Kelli’s number, and they started talking. After a year of dating, Tyler brought Kelli to the Pantages Theater to see “Hamilton,” which she found slightly strange since he wasn’t a theater guy. Her suspicions were verified when Tyler proposed at home after the performance. He even snuck their friends into the house for an impromptu celebration after she said yes!

The wedding was an amazing celebration. Kelli wore her mom’s wedding dress from the ‘80s and had it tailored to make it more modern. Her dad, who officiated the ceremony, decided to play a harmless joke on Kelli since he knows how much she despises magicians. During the ceremony, he had Tyler pick a card and kept it hidden for later. While dancing with Kelli, her dad pulled the card out of his sleeve, which was a big hit with the crowd. Another big highlight involved Kelli’s 10-year-old son. To everyone’s surprise, he gave a speech introducing Tyler as his new stepdad. There wasn’t a dry eye left in the building after he finished speaking. Instead of going on a honeymoon after the wedding, Kelli and Tyler went on a “hauntedmoon” to visit some of the most haunted locations in the state. They visited Alcatraz, the Winchester Mystery House, and a few other locations.

We’re so happy for Kelli and her new husband! We wish the best for both of you going forward!

Travel to the zoo. Many children love seeing various animals in their habitats, interacting with zookeepers, and running around the playground. You can make your family’s trip to the zoo educational by asking your children questions about what kind of animal you’re looking at (carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore), the climates they live in, and where in the world they come from.

You can also attend educational activities at the zoo or go online and print out various worksheets for your children to complete.

Your kids are probably looking forward to sleeping in, staying up past their bedtime, and having no homework or tests now that school’s out for summer. This seasonal break is an excellent time for your children to decompress and rest until the next school year, but it’s also imperative that they don’t forget everything they learned during the school year! According to the U.S. Department of Education, during the summer, many students lose some of their academic skills because they aren’t using them. After all, what kid wants to study when they can play outside? But when kids don’t engage in the skills they learned at school, they are more likely to struggle once they go back. So, how can you make learning over the summer fun and educational? Ring the Bell — School’s Out! HOW TO KEEP CHILDREN ENGAGED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Take a nature walk. You can incorporate Mother Nature into your activities by taking nature walks. Not only can your children release their energy by running, walking, or hiking a trail, but they can also learn more about their environment. You and your child can identify trees and flowers during your walk and figure out why insects, birds, or bees gravitate toward particular plants. Dozens of rocks and gems are also lying on the Earth’s surface, and your children can also attempt to identify these pieces and learn how rocks break down to create sand or dirt. Do DIY experiments. Head to your local crafts store or supermarket or go online to find premade science project kits that are fun for the whole family! These kits come with everything you need to conduct all kinds of experiments, like making crystals or observing cells and germs under a microscope. For children who love hands-on activities, these kits are a great option!
