Charles II of Naples’ 1289 expulsion and the others before, also demonstrated to Edward
that he could do the same. Edward fought for permission to issue that new tax to pay for his
debt and knew that English Jewry stood in his way. If they remained, it would have cost him
a fortune. That was the final contributing factor and the one that sealed the fate of an
estimated three-thousand people. This and the reasons previously addressed are all
responsible for a brewing tide of prejudice that engulfed Edward. This resulted in the
expulsion of the Jews.
