History of the Links, Incorporated and The San Bernardino Valley (CA) Chapter
The Links, Incorporated is an international, non - profit corporation established on November 9, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its membership spans more than 17,000 professional women of color and is spread across 300 chapters in 41 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom. As one of the nation ’ s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations, it is committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The San Bernardino Valley Chapter, which was officially chartered on May 4, 1979, has an inspiring origin story. It was the brainchild of Mrs. Betty Dean Anderson and Mrs. Princie Smith, who, in 1978, gathered a group of 19 service - minded women with a shared vision of improving the communities of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. They introduced the chapter to the citizens of the Inland Empire through a special event, the first Breakfast Ball, held on Saturday, May 5, 1979 at the El Rancho Verde Country Club in Rialto, California. This event, now known as the Scholarship Breakfast Ball, has been a cherished Mother ’ s Day weekend tradition since its inception. Since its charter on May 4, 1979, the San Bernardino Valley Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has left a significant mark on the surrounding cities. Through its resources, it has empowered adults and children, both locally and globally. It has implemented tutoring and mentoring programs for our youth, fostered civic involvement, promoted cultural enrichment, and offered free health and wellness workshops to the public. This unwavering commitment to service and friendship has been the driving force behind the chapter's continuous efforts to enhance our communities.
