Propaganda Material Recently in Berlin, at the gateway to the Eastern Zone a truckload of Bibles was stopped and turned back by Soviet border guards. The reason given by the Communists for the refusal to let the Bibles go through was an excellent one. They claimed the books were illegal as they were propaganda material. To this we agree, but add that it is exactly that which the Soviet people so desperately A news item reveals that the Ameri can people chewed less tobacco last year. In fact, some 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 pounds less than the record low of 1948. Yet, before we regard this as an indica tion of the near approach of the millen nium, let us add that cigaret consumption continued to rise, and the whole tobacco financial picture is a shameful one. Men and women of our country are sending up in smoke far more in this vile habit than all that is spent on education from the tiny red schoolhouse to our vast uni versities. Does The Bible Belong? & One of the most controversial problems of the present Israel government is the place of the Mosaic law in the constitu tion. The orthodox groups insist that the Israel constitution should be the Old Testament. They reason that a man made Bill of Rights would be superflu ous for if it were to be at variance with “ the Book,” it would be sacrilege. How ever, Premier David Ben Gurion is tak ing his time. He says, “ I have only dealt with matters which this Parliament can put to the vote. No one in this house pre sumes to vote on the Almighty.” Record Attendance According to the Sunday School Times, Mr. Fred Curry, Mt. Sterling, Illinois, has attended Sunday School in the same church for 72 years, missing only two Sundays. One of these Sundays was when his mother died, and the other was when his house caught fire. This record is per haps the best in the country. Mr. Curry has had a total attendance of 3742 Sun days. To this could be added God’s bless ings which have attended Mr. Curry: good health and steady work. 1. Meekness ............................. Jonah 2. Doubt ................................. others in research expeditions, Dean Aaron J. Smith of the People’s Bible College, Greensboro, N. C., is still sure that the remains of Noah’s ancient boat are resting somewhere in the general vicinity of what is now called the Ararat Mountains. Dr. Smith has made the search for the ark the culmination of painstaking research for the last twenty- five years. He has gathered material from countless sources all of which he believes points positively to the certainty of the ark’s present whereabouts. Crime Marches J* A disturbing document is the 39th semi-annual Uniform Crime Report. Fig ures show the first six months of 1949 had a steady rise in almost all types of crime. Rural crime particularly had in creased. Those that had accomplished this record were in the age groups of 20 to 24 and so could not be veterans of World War II, who admittedly had much training in violence. Their average age is 30. Director Edgar Hoover, who thinks very seriously on these statistics, adds: “ Only the right influences in entertain ment, home life, schools and churches can instill personal integrity and good morals in youngsters who might other wise become delinquents. Unless we can ward off criminal tendencies early, there is no real way to make the future look more comforting than today.” Rescue Christmas Dr. Jesse M. Bader of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America called on every Protestant Church to help “ spiritualize” the two holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The churches believe that the time has come when we must make Christmas a celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ. Bader believes there is too much emphasis on turkey, tinsel and presents, all of which result in headache-produc ing revelry. Invitation is being sent through 37 denominations to ask their 140,000 local churches to help in the effort.

Double Standard <£ According to Justice I. Montefiore Levy, of the Domestic Court of New York, a husband has the right to expect his wife to be pure when he marries her, but in regard to the man the Justice de clared, “ It is taken for granted that at marriage the major number of men are incontinent.” The occasion was a suit in stituted by a wife on the basis of the un chastity of the husband. This edict recog nized the so-called double standard in conditions of present-day society. Let it not be forgotten, however, that the law of God has never conformed to society. God demands of both men and women exactly the same degree of morality. Baptists Build To the question of what Christian peo ple should do about the lack of Bible-in spired teaching in the public schools, the Northern Baptist Convention Crusader suggests three choices: First, to wage a battle to get God back into the public schools; second, to mobilize Christian forces to counteract the evil influence of current public education; and third, to build Protestant or elementary schools. Already in many communities the Bap tists have found the last solution the only one possible. In Los Angeles there are now three Christian secondary schools with plans for a high school. Classes are held in the spacious facilities of the larger churches. YPC on TV «5* For the first time in television his tory, a religious program will be heard and seen on a national network, coast-to- coast. Rev. Percy Crawford, well-known youth leader, will originate a television broadcast in Philadelphia over the American System. The program called Youth on the March will present the gospel particularly to young people in Crawford’s own inimitable style.
