King's Business - 1949-11

Will it be literally true that “the lion and the lamb shall lie down together ” in Christ’s kingdom on earth, or is this fig urative? Yes, we believe this will be literally true. All ferocity will be taken away from the beasts of the field; there will be peace in the animal kingdom, as well as among men. “ They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (Isa. 11:9). These words from God, as well as many other passages, tell us what to expect when Jesus reigns in righteousness. Read all of this eleventh chapter of Isaiah to see the beautiful prophecy. There were no thorns in Eden, and in that coming day, “Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree” (Isa. 55:13). The nations of the earth shall “ beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: na tion shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isa. 2:4). “ The creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom. 8:21 R.V.). How have “all families of the earth been blessed” in the descendants of Abraham? Christ was a Jew “ according to the flesh,” and unto the Jews “ were com mitted the oracles of God” (Rom. 3:2), so that Christ and the Bible came through the nation of Israel to bless the whole world. During the reign of Christ on earth this promise of God to Abra ham will be fulfilled completely. Then the Gentile nations will seek the God of Israel, and through His chosen people blessing will flow to all families of the earth. What is modernism, and what is meant when a minister is declared to be a modernist? Modernism is the substitution of hu man philosophy for divine revelation. Really, the word modernism is a misno mer. Its true title should be “ ancient- ism,” for it asks the old question raised by Satan in the Garden of Eden, “Hath God said?” Modernism denies the inspiration of the Bible, the Virgin Birth, the deity of Christ, the fall of man and the atone ment of Jesus Christ. It also denies the physical resurrection of Christ; and, of course, laughs at the doctrine of His sec ond coming. Modernism is as anti-chris- tian as are Christian Science and The osophy. It is the worst blight on Chris tendom today. A modernist preacher is one who believes in modernism. What was the difference between the Jewish temple and the synagogue? These buildings differed in that the temple was the only place where sacri fices could be offered, whereas the syna gogue was merely a place for reading and prayer.

Please explain Philippians U:8. While this verse is self-explanatory, I suppose the reader’s question is with re spect to the possibility of anyone’s be ing able to live up to it. Of course no one would be able to except by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jude 21 I read, “Keep yourselves in the love of God.” How is this done? We keep ourselves in the love of God by obedience. This is shown in John 15:10: “ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” The commandment the Lord refers to is that we “ love one another.” Many be lievers, because they harbor malice, re sentment, and ill-will toward other be lievers, miss fellowship with Christ, and lose a consciousness of His presence. How this command needs to be pressed upon the conscience of Christians today. To keep ourselves in the love of God, also includes Bible reading, prayer, the stewardship of life and possessions—our whole Christian testimony. 'The Scriptures teach positively that a true child of God goes immediately to heaven at the time of physical dissolu tion of body and soul. Second Corinthi ans 5:8 gives us that assurance: “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (Cf. Phil. 1:23 and other nassages of Scripture.) Luke 16:22 tells us that the angels re ceive the spirits of the departing saints —a comforting thought that they take our spirits home to heaven and into the presence of God. They are our “min isters” you know, “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” (Heb. 1:14). They guard us here on earth, and take us to heaven when we die. “ The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psa. 34:7). “He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone” (Psa. 91:11, 12). Do the saved go immediately to heaven when, they die?
