King's Business - 1949-11

Lord had promised that within two years all of the Jewish captives and all of the vessels of the Lord’s house would be re turned to Jerusalem. Jeremiah said in reply that all of the prophets in the past had brought God’s message of war and evil to His sinful people. Hananiah took a yoke that was around Jeremiah’s neck and broke it saying that the Lord would thus break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. Jeremiah went on his way. Soon he received a message from God asking him to tell Hananiah that he was to be pun ished for bringing a false message and declaring that God had given him that message. Jeremiah said, “ The Lord hath not sent thee, but thou makest this peo ple to trust in a lie. Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught re bellion against the Lord.” God’s Word tells us that Hananiah did die that same year. Just as a good shepherd often has to do hard things to care for his sheep, so a good prophet or preacher or Sunday school teacher will not refuse a difficult task for the good of those in his charge. God commands, “He that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.” Some preachers, missionaries, and Sunday school teachers are bringing false mes sages in the name of the Lord today. God will punish them, and many souls will be lost because of their wrong teaching. In a number of places God’s Word warns us against false teachers. Be certain that you worship where all of God’s Word is taught exactly as it is written. Make certain, too, that you are a faithful and a truthful witness for the Lord. Jeremiah prophesied in the time when Judah was fast heading toward captivity. Through sin and idolatry they were losing their strength and God was about ready to bring the nation into chastise ment. But even so the arms o f God were always extended toward any who might repent of their evil ways. Relationship to God is a personal thing—a matter of the heart. Jeremiah has something to say about that in the lesson this week. A Note of Disappointment Jer. 8:4-6 These verses were uttered by the prophet as he stood in the gate of the temple (7:2). Very likely it was on the occasion of one of the feasts of the Jews. These Jews had the idea that since they had repaired the temple and re stored its various services all that was necessary had been done. They could go on living a double life, trusting in an N O V E M B E R , 1 9 4 9 Dec. 11, 1949 PERSONAL RELIGION Jer. 8:4-6; 31:29-34 Pointers on the Lesson

“ Forgive me if I only now send you my hearty thanks for the five splen did boxes that con tained so much use ful clothing, shoes and food,” writes a Jewish missionary fr om G erm an y . “ We cou ld help many needy per sons w ith all the valuable things, for

your large packages just at the time we were working in these D. P. Camps. Thus we were able to show Christian love in a practical way as we tried to win for Christ these poorest of the poor.” What a joy it is to be associated with these earnest, devoted mission aries laboring amongst the remnants of surviving Jews and Hebrew Christ ians in Europe. How infinitely grate ful we are to all Christians who help us to carry on this ministry of feeding the hungry and clothing the naked amongst those of Christ’s brethren who have suffered so much. At this time of great need in our work in Europe and Palestine, we plead for special prayer and sacrificial gifts to enable us to carry on. I was so glad to pass on things of value to them. We also find much poverty among the people in the Displaced Persons Camps where there are Polish Jews. It was a wonderful Providence that we received
