earthly temple. They needed to learn that religion is a thing of the heart, not a matter of outward observances only. Judah’s experience was a disappoint ment to God. Usually when a person falls down, he gets up again and goes on his way (v. 4). Judah fell into sin, but did she get up again to walk in the way of rectitude? No, she continued in her back sliding and refused to return to God’s way (w . 4, 5). The people rushed head long into wickedness, heedless of the consequences even as a horse under the influence of military excitement plunges into battle disregarding the fearful con sequences. The Vision of the New Covenant Jer. 31:29-34 The message about the new covenant was doubtless connected with a vision by night (v. 26). Verses 29 and 30 about the “ sour grapes” point forward to a day when there will not be suffering for others’ sins, as was the case in the Babylonian captivity. The words about the new covenant are directed not to Gentiles or to the Church, but to the joint house of Judah and Israel (see Heb. 8:8-13). The old covenant is the law-covenant made di rectly with Israel. The new covenant is of grace, based upon the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ. He died for Israel, but that nation as yet does not enjoy the blessing of the new covenant, because of their rejection of Christ. However, even though Israel has not yet the blessings of this new covenant, Gentiles who are by nature “ strangers from the covenants of promise” but who believe in Christ, enjoy its privi leges to the full. A day is coming when Israel as a nation will be born again and shall know the Lord in their hearts; their sins will no longer be re membered against them. It is true of any one today who ac cepts Christ as his personal Saviour that the sin question is forever settled. God treats every justified soul just as if he had never sinned at all as far as judgment for its guilt is concerned. Memory Verse: “Love worketh no ill [does no wrong] to his neighbour: there fore love is the fulfilling of the law” (Rom. 13:10). Some people obey man’s and God’s laws because they are afraid of punish ment if they do not. Others obey these laws because they enjoy doing right, which is best for them and for others. When the Children of Israel were journeying toward the promised land with Moses as their human leader, God gave them many laws or ordinances to obey. In the New Testament we find many laws for those who love the Lord Jesus and who have received Him as their Saviour. In the Old Testament days, as now, there were some people who obeyed out T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S Helps for the Children Loving and Serving God Jer. 31:31-35
