The Coming King and His Kingdom 11:1-5 When Assyria falls, it will be forever. But Messiah will establish a kingdom which will last forever. These five verses teach us: (1) Who the King is, v. 1. It is not Hezekiah nor Josiah nor any other mere man. Only Christ satisfies the description of the chapter. (2) What is the source of the King’s power, v. 2. It is the Spirit of God Himself in a seven-fold aspect, the abiding Spirit, the Spirit of wisdom, of understanding, of counsel, of might, of knowledge, and of reverence. It is wonderful to contem plate that this same Spirit is the posses sion of every believer (1 Cor. 6:19). (3) How the King will work, w . 3-5. The main import of these words is that the kingdom which Messiah will estab lish will be a righteous kingdom. Thus it will be a unique kingdom for among all the kingdoms ruled by man there has never been a truly righteous king dom. This wonderful chapter continues with a fuller description of the Messianic economy, its extent, and manner of es tablishment. Helps for the Children The Prince of Peace Isaiah 2:2-4; 9:1-7; Luke 2 Memory Verse: “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10, 11 ). Does it not seem strange that upon the day when we celebrate the birthday of the Prince of Peace, the world is filled with hatred and war and sin? The prophet Isaiah told, through the Holy Spirit, of a time when all would know of God, and when there would be peace and love upon the earth. What joy there was among the angels and in the hearts of God’s children the day that the angel’s promise to Mary came to pass! Had God’s Son been born in a palace, the poor people might have felt that He had no interest in them. Had the message of His birth been sung by the angels to the great religious leaders, many of whom were not true servants of God, others might not have believed that the Saviour had come for them. The Saviour of the world had a birth entirely different from what we might expect. His bed was a manger; His room was a stable; and His first visitors were lowly shepherds. Lives, homes, and nations have been changed because of the coming of God’s Son to be the Messiah, the Saviour. Still there are multitudes who refuse to receive Him and to let Him take charge of their lives. What have you chosen to do with Him upon His birthday? Have you selfishly thought only of yourself and of your friends today, or have you been con scious of your Savior’s presence in your own heart, and in your home upon His birthday?
