Bob’s light burns brightly. Here is the secret. (Put your fingers through the open bottom.) He keeps the door open toward heaven. He keeps the door open because he reads the Bible and prays. Notice what happens when I close Bob’s door toward heaven. (Put the bottom back on the bottle.) The light grows dim. When the door is opened, the light again burns brightly. Our memory verse for today found in John 14:23, says “ If a man love me, he will keep my words.” In Matthew 5:16 we are told “ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Objects: A promissory note for one hundred dollars, and a check for the same amount dated two months later. Lesson: How many of you ever made a promise and didn’t keep it? It is wrong to break promises. Soon people will not believe you at all.

In the business world, when one per son owes another a certain amount of money he often gives a written promise to pay on a certain date. This promise is called a “ Promissory Note.” I thought you would be interested in seeing one of these written promises Here it is. It is dated two months ago. It reads, “ Two months from this date I promise to pay William Jones one hun dred dollars.” The note is signed by Sam Smith. The time has come for the payment, and here is a check to pay the note. It reads, “ Pay to the order of William Jones, one hundred dollars.” It, too, is signed by Sam Smith. When a note is paid by check, the one who receives the check goes to the bank and gets the money. He then can use the money. This note reminds me of a promise which God made in Isaiah 7:14. “ There fore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Im manuel.” The people needed a prophet and a Redeemer, and this promissory note signed by God, that one would come, encouraged them to continue. In Luke 1 we find that God did send a Messiah, a Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ. He kept His promise to the people. We are rich because of it, for if we have the Lord Jesus in our heart, we have ever lasting life, a home in heaven, and a heavenly Father who gives us all that we could ever need.
