The ERU offers disaster relief efforts locally, as well as on a provincial and national scale. Meanwhile, dogs and handlers visit care homes, community events, hospitals, libraries and schools to be of comfort to those in times of stress. “Everybody loves the dogs,” Ross beams. Regarding Medical First Responders, these are volunteers providing First Aid and safety assistance during public events; such as Canada Day at 1Password Park, for example. Presently, there are 25 local Medical First Responders volunteering their time to ensure the safety of public community events. He is an instructor for Basic Life Saving and Standard First Aid; most recently certified in Pet First Aid. Ross declares with gratitude, “A lot of my folks work in emergency services, then volunteer their time here to continue helping people – I find that incredible.” St. John Ambulance St. Thomas-Elgin by Peri Hayes The initial Canadian branch of St. John Ambulance debuted in 1883. Having grown to be a national organization, St. John Ambulance St. Thomas-Elgin was established in 1917. This is a non-profit organization, with volunteers offering assistance during human and natural disasters. As Ross details, “Some of the greatest feedback we receive is that the staff at these public events feel supported knowing that

we are there to help. We also triage before paramedics arrive on-site, so that they are not starting from scratch. We are giving back to our community, to the people in St. Thomas and Elgin
