When the Unexpected Happens: A Lesson in Pivoting from Yurek’s Pharmacy For more than six decades, Yurek’s Pharmacy & Home Healthcare has been a fixture on Talbot Street. Founded in 1963 by Ed Yurek, the independent pharmacy has weathered industry changes, corporate competition, and evolving customer expectations. But in December, the business was forced into one of its biggest pivots yet. On December 18, a major fire in a neighbouring building caused extensive smoke and water damage to Yurek’s Pharmacy, effectively shutting down normal operations. “Smoke went through the entire building,” says Jeff Yurek, Pharmacist and Co-Owner. “We have a double building, and it basically shut down any means of usage. Everything had to be stripped right back to the brick to get rid of the smoke smell, which tends to be the biggest issue.” The rebuild will take six to seven months, but for Jeff and his team, closing the doors was never an option. “Our focus was our patients, making sure they got their medications,” he says. “That was the priority from day one.” Within a day, Yurek’s Pharmacy had pivoted into survival mode. Servers had to be rescued, data secured, and a temporary location found. “If we didn’t get the servers operational, our data would have been lost,” Jeff explains. “We had great staff, and incredible community support. Without both, that pivot never would have happened.”
