A story of love through pain

was adequate for his other half. “I went to go see six different places before choosingMaxville,” he said. “Ironically, she had worked there before, during night shifts.” Theman’s experience has created a new- found respect for caretakers. “I always knew they worked hard,” he said. “But I under- stand now why some of them are burned out or depressed. It’s hard work that not a lot of us would be willing to do.” David will share his heartfelt story during this year’s Russell Ladies Night. The event, open to women only, consists of a silent auc- tion, dinner, live auction and entertainment. In addition, 100 per cent of the funds raised from the silent and live auctions will be donated to fund research, as well as pro- grams and services for people in the com- munity living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

David Turley and his wife Carol were high school sweethearts. Together, they started their life in Russell and established a lov- ing family. But seven years ago started what would completely transform their lives. “I was inmy office one day and I heard this loud explosion from the kitchen,” saidDavid during a phone interview. “When I reached to kitchen to find out what it was, I saw that my wife had put something in the microwave for too long. She simply brushed it aside, saying it could happen to everyone. That’s when I noticed that it was Tupperware.”

Carol was in the early stages of Alzheimer, a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior.

Be bear-wise With spring, the black bear starts to get out and about in Ontario’s wilderness areas. Residents in parts of rural Eastern Ontario are reminded to follow some simple rules to make sure spring bears do not wander onto their property in search of food after the long winter fast. Keep garbage stored in secure containers and do not place them out overnight before collection day. Do not leave bird feeders and suet balls outdoors now that winter is over. During the spring and summer, harvest any ripe fruit and vegetables. Bears can smell potential food sites from great distances. Do not leave pet food dishes outside. If a bear is in the yard, stay inside and call 911. – Gregg Chamberlain In addition, David also explained that even though a patient may be located at the top of the list, if an emergency was to occur, the said patient would be pushed aside in order to accommodate the emergency. The man also wanted tomake sure the institution Carol was in the early stages of Alzheimer, a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. “Little things were happening,” he said. “She would wash the dishes without putting soap and things like that.” David became his wife’s caregiver, amove that saw him take care of her for five years. “At first, I thought that I could easily do it,” he explained. “But after the first year, I realized just how hard it would be!” Thankfully for theman, several programs were offered to his wife, such as the Day Away Program. “The Alzheimer’s Society really helps,” he said. “There’s this one fam- ily case worker, Jeanne Poirier, which was always there for us.” But the endeavour proved too much for David. He therefore decided to place his wife in a long term care centre. “I was very impressed by how they treated her and the overall institution,” he explained. But like everything else that’s perfect, it came with a catch. “When I first mentioned I wanted her to be living in a long term institution, I was told that there was a waiting list, depending on how severe her Alzheimer was.”
