King's Business - 1953-09

SUNDAY SCHOOL continued “ The prophecy of this passage is still un fulfilled, for Israel does not enjoy this new covenant now. In the meantime, while Israel does not enjoy the blessings of this new covenant, Gentiles, who by nature are aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, believing in Christ, possess the blessings of this new covenant to the full. In that coming day of Israel’s return, the nation, Israel and Judah, will be bom again, know the Lord, and their sins will be remembered no more” (Gaebelein). Great experiences are ahead for God’s chosen people who know the Messiah. How God Expects Whether Jew or Gentile, when a person is bom again, when the Spirit infills him, there will be a different kind of a walk. God expects such a person to live (1) thoughtfully— “ gird up the loins of your mind” (v. 13). He ought to think God’s thoughts as revealed in His Word. He ought to live (2) soberly— “be sober” (v. 13). Sobriety ought always to mark God’s children. This is the opposite of frivolity which is a mark of the children of this world. He should be (3) hopeful— “ hope- to the end” (v. 13). He should have his mind constantly fixed upon the blessed hope of the coming of the Lord when our salvation will be consummated (Tit. 2:13). He should be (4), obedient— “ as obedient children” (v. 14). It should be a case of “ like Father, like children.” They who are the children of God ought to de light in manifesting His character. He ought to live (5) purely—“ be ye holy” (w . 15, 16). The reason for such living is perfectly logical. Being the children of a holy God and partakers of His nature, Born-Again Men to Live 1 Pet. 1:13-16, 22, 23

bom-again ones ought to show before the world whose they are. Furthermore, the child of God is ex pected to live (6) lovingly— “ love one an other” (v. 22). Fellow-members of the body of Christ are bound to love one an other. Some awful things are said about those who have hatred in their hearts toward believers (1 John 3:15). Finally, he ought to live (7) in newness of life— “ Being bom again” (v. 23). The idea in verse 23 is that the believer ought to let the new birth which he already has be manifest to the world. He ought to live like a Christian. Literally, the passage may read, “Having been begotten again” he ought to give abundant evidence of that new life before men. Helps for the Children Living at Our Best Matt. 5:1-10; John 3:16; Phil. k:13 Memory Verse: " I delight to do thy will, O my God" (Psa. 40:8a). When the Lord Jesus Christ, the Sm of God, came to the earth there were many things about God that He needed to teach the people. One day the Saviour went up into a mountain and sat down to talk to the people about His Father in heaven. All of those who heard God’s Son speak wanted to be happy' and satisfied in life. He gave to them some rules for true happiness. Each rule started with the word Blessed which means truly happy or sat isfied. You may read these rules in Mat thew 5:1-10. To be happy the Lord Jesus told the people that they must have cer tain things true in their lives. They must be meek—not always feeling that they were better than ^others. They must want to know God and His Word better. They must be kind and thoughtful of others. Their hearts must be pure and clean. They must be peacemakers rather than always

trying to “pick a fight” or argue with others. They must love their Lord enough to suffer for Him if it is necessary. Go back and read each of the verses begin ning with Blessed in Matthew 5. How many of these things are true in your life? Perhaps you are not truly happy in your home or in your school. Can you find the reason as you read these rules for happi ness? I f only one of these rules is being broken by you, you cannot be truly happy or satisfied. Perhaps you have tried in your own strength to keep these rules, but when you are sick or tired you break them. Would you like to know how you may keep these rules and be happy? In Philippians 4:13 we read the secret of victory: “ I can do all things through Christ which strengthened: me.” Just as you cannot save yourself, so you cannot have a happy and satisfied life in your own strength. Only the Lord Jesus can give you salvation, and only He can help you live in a way that will be well pleasing to God. Oct. 18, 1953 New Men and A New World Matt. 5:13-16; 2 Cor. 5:17-19 Jas. 2:14-18 Pointers on the Lesson The title of the lesson is very suggestive. There will never be a new world without new men. The trouble with the world to day is that there are the wrong kind of men in it. Leaders in world affairs today are trying to bring about a new world by means of treaties, disarmament, trade agreements, etcetera. But the new world that is so much needed will not come about that way. It will only come when men become subject to the will of Him who one day will be the King of kings
