Fire department tanker proposal ‘‘parked’’ for now
Right now, the Russell Fire Department is doing a search for a good used tanker truck that might be available for a reason- able price. Getting a newer used tanker may be necessary for the village to maintain its national fire protection level accreditation and also meet the official standards of the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office. Coun. Craig Cullen wants administration to get confirmation on those two points uled for the weekends of Nov. 9 and Nov. 16. The Russell Optimist Club will receive an in-kind grant worth $300 related to rental costs of the municipal hall in Russell village for the group’s monthly youth dances. Ad hoc grants of $500 and $2000 will go to Embrun Watch and the Russell Soccer Club. The neighbourhood watch group will use its $500 to help with costs for its 20th anniversary celebration event Nov. 8. The soccer club will use its $2000 grant for costs for repairs to the soccer field located next to the Russell Municipal Library.
and also confirm whether or not local fire insurance rates for Russell village and the surrounding area would be affected if the fire department did not get a newer re- placement for its current tanker truck. Both Coun. Pierre Leroux and Mayor Jean- Paul St-Pierre wondered about the impact on local fire insurance rates for Russell area homeowners if the fire department did not replace its tanker truck. Leroux also noted that the fire department’s own future needs report indicated replacements for the existing ladder truck and pumper truck will be necessary in a few years. He suggested
the township should set aside replacing the tanker truck and focus instead on saving up for those two items in the department’s vehicle fleet. During the Oct. 30 session of the re- cent two-day 2014 budget review, council agreed to “park” the tanker replacement proposal until administration could get more information on the impact of making do with the present unit. Administration will also investigate whether the existing pumper truck, due for future replacement, could be converted to a tanker unit.
