SYMPTOMS OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the normal function of the brain as a result of head trauma. A blow, bump, or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury, often causes TBI-related injuries. Car accidents, falls, and severe sports injuries account for most traumatic brain injuries. However, any instance that involves a head injury has the potential to cause a traumatic brain injury. TBI symptoms vary depending on the severity of the injury. There are TBI signs you’ll notice immediately, while other long- term symptoms can go unnoticed for months. If your loved one recently sustained a TBI, watch out for these symptoms. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms Also known as concussions, mild traumatic brain injuries may affect your brain temporarily. These symptoms may appear immediately or a week after a traumatic event like a car accident. According to the Mayo Clinic, they can cause the following symptoms in children and adults: • Nausea • Fatigue • Dizziness or loss of balance • Blurred vision, ringing in the ears, a bad taste in the mouth, or changes in smell • Sensitivity to light or sound • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds to a few minutes • Memory or concentration problems

• Mood changes • Feeling depressed or anxious • Sleep difficulties

Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms Serious traumatic brain injuries often cause long-term

complications or death. This brain trauma may result in bleeding, bruising, torn tissues, or other physical damage to the brain. When the brain undergoes severe damage, the effects are often life-altering. Sometimes, the victim becomes a different person. TBI patients may experience debilitating physical and emotional symptoms, including:

• Memory loss • Chronic anxiety and/or depression • Persistent headaches • Seizures • Fatigue • Balance or coordination problems If your loved one is showing any of the above symptoms after a head injury, seek medical treatment immediately. BICYCLING IN THE CITY CAN BE HAZARDOUS

Here’s What You Need to Know

Riding your bike is a great way to exercise and see the sights in Chicago and its suburbs, but it can be dangerous. You have to share the streets and sidewalks with cars, trucks, and pedestrians. Every time a bicyclist starts pedaling, they’re at risk of being hit by a vehicle, regardless of what measures they take to prevent an accident. In 2018 alone, more than 2,500 bicyclists were injured in Illinois crashes. These bike crashes are more likely to occur in urban areas. Bicyclists are often hit by drivers who don’t see them until it’s too late. What’s more, bicyclists suffer more permanent and life-altering injuries on average when they’re in an accident. In fact, nearly 14% of Illinois bicycle accidents in 2018 resulted in permanent injuries — compared to just 3.5% of the total crashes that year.

Bicycle accident lawsuits are complicated, and they shouldn’t be handled without a lawyer if you suffered a serious injury.
