COLOSSIANS

by Dr. Glenn O'Neal Professor of Practical Theology Talbot Seminary

SUPREME HEADSHIP The supreme headship of Christ in Colosse had been minimized. The people were giving emphasis to religion but not to Christ. There was more of a mystical approach to Cod, through angels. Here was gross error as those who should have known better were engaging in fantastic transcendental ideal ism. This reminds me of a little boy who buys a package of soap bub bles. He puts this material into a glass of water, and then he takes the ring with which he seeks to put the bubbles in the air. When he tries to grasp them they disap pear. Such is the religion of many people. They have nothing solid to which they can hold. The petition is that we might "walk worthy of the Lord." The first step is to understand what Christ did for us. We know that He has delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into Page 33

There is a wonderful study con cerning the glories of Jesus Christ to be found in the Epistle of Colos- sians. In the very first chapter there is a prayer which is practical for us today. For this cause we also, since the day we heard It, do not cease to pray for you and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wis dom and spiritual understand ing; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, b e ing fru it fu l in eve ry good work, and in c rea s ing in the knowledge of God; Strength ened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, who hath made us meet to be partakers of the in heritance of the saints in light. Colossians 1:9-12
