hen Tom Elieff first stepped onto the Ann & Nate Levine Academy campus in 2014, he brought with him decades of experience and a passion for innovative education. Today, as Head of School, his leadership has shaped Levine into a dynamic, forward-thinking school rooted in Jewish values and academic excellence. During this year’s Gala, Tom will be honored for his 12 years of commitment to Levine as Head of School before he retires next summer. During his time here, Tom led with a vision that transformed a school and a community. Tom’s journey began in Chicago at Lake Forest Academy where he spent 15 formative years as a teacher, administrator and eventually interim headmaster. His career then took him to St. Mark’s School in Dallas as Head of Upper School, followed by leadership roles in Seattle and Houston at Jewish day schools. Each chapter taught him invaluable lessons about leading teams, strategic vision and the power of community. In 2013, a visit from Levine’s Board President, Chuck Butler, sparked a conversation that changed everything. “I wasn’t looking to move,” Tom said. “But their commitment to growth and excellence inspired me.” By 2014, he was leading Levine with a clear mission to evolve the school academically while honoring its Jewish traditions.
T om’s first two years were marked by bold changes in revamping academics and building a strong administrative team. Under his guidance, over time Levine achieved ISAS accreditation, strengthened its academic programs and expanded its reputation nationally. In his current position on the ISAS Board and through his relationship with the other ISAS school leaders, Tom is constantly thinking about improvements. “Our philosophy is simple,” said Tom. “Don’t just look in the mirror. Look out the window and seek something better.” From Early Childhood through Middle School, Levine now boasts a culture of professional development, innovation and inclusivity with a clear direction from Tom. Tom is proud of the passionate educators and resilient students who embody the school’s mission of inclusive and dynamic education rooted in Jewish values. “Every day, I see Tom act upon how deeply he cares about our school’s mission,” said Nicole Solman Rosenbaum, Director of Early Childhood. “His leadership in both EC and older grades has been extraordinary. I’ve enjoyed sharing his passion for Levine to flourish.” For Tom, academic excellence and Jewish identity go hand in hand. Under his leadership, Levine has woven Jewish values into every aspect of the curriculum, ensuring that students not only master core subjects but also develop a deep sense of purpose and ethical responsibility. Rabbi Feivel Rubinstein, Director of Jewish Life & Learning, who has worked closely with Tom since he joined Levine in 2023, said he’s been thankful for his collaboration. “We’ve had an incredible partnership bringing Jewish values to life within our academic framework,” said Rabbi Feivel. “Together, we try our best to ensure that our students see these values not just as traditions, but as living values that shape their daily learning and future beyond our campus.” Tom’s commitment to student success doesn’t end at graduation. He is deeply passionate about preparing eighth graders for life beyond Levine through the Life After Levine program. As part of this process, Tom personally meets with every student and helps them refine their interview skills, identify their strengths and gain confidence in speaking about their experience. The program’s aim is to guide students’ transition into high school where they may thrive academically and socially. “Our goal is to ensure that every student leaves Levine ready to excel,” said Tom. “Not just in the next chapter, but in every chapter that follows.” At a curriculum level, Levine has taken careful consideration of how it compares to top high schools in the area, explains Liz Lawlor, K8 Principal. “There’s almost a seamless transition and our kids do so well when they go to the independent high schools and the public high schools,” Liz said. “I think that’s testament to how well they are prepared here at Levine.”
Andrea Steiger is very familiar with Tom’s legacy as a parent and current Board President. Going forward, Andrea said she’s impressed with how Tom has positioned Levine for the future. “Thanks to Tom, our school is not only well run today but is equipped to grow stronger in the years ahead,” she said. As Tom reflects on his time at Levine, his vision for the future is clear, to leave behind a legacy of academic excellence, Jewish identity and a deeply connected community. He hopes that his leadership will be remembered for fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity and lifelong learning. “My heart is with what happens in the classroom,” said Tom. “That’s where the magic begins. We start there and if our students graduate with confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of who they are, then we’ve succeeded.”
