Sergey RACHMANINOV (1873–1943) Morceaux de Fantaisie Morceaux de Salon Three Nocturnes • Four Pieces Boris Giltburg, Piano Composed at the age of 19, Rachmaninov’s earliest published cycle of piano pieces, the Morceaux de Fantaisie , contains the Prélude in C sharp minor , destined to become his signature work, and the Mélodie in E major , much loved by Tchaikovsky. The expressive Morceaux de Salon show Tchaikovsky’s influence and some of the grief felt by Rachmaninov after his mentor’s death. With the inclusion of the melodically rich Nocturnes and the Four Pieces , the earliest to survive in his hand, this collection shows both the young composer finding his voice and the timeless Rachmaninov we recognise today. Key features: • Boris Giltburg’s recordings of the Études-tableaux, Op. 39 and the Moments musicaux (Naxos 8.573469) received wide critical approval, becoming a Gramophone Recording of the Month and admired for ‘a convergence of heart and mind, served by immaculate technique and motivated by a deep and abiding love for one of the 20th century’s greatest composer-pianists.’ Giltburg has also recorded Rachmaninov’s two piano sonatas (8.574601), and the Préludes Opp. 23 and 32 (8.574025) considered ‘hugely recommendable’ in BBC Music Magazine . • In addition to this solo repertoire, Boris Giltburg’s recording of Rachmaninov’s First and Fourth Piano Concertos (Naxos 8.574528) completed his concerto cycle in 2023, and was regarded in Gramophone as a ‘superb disc, Giltburg is a joy to hear’. Giltburg’s recording of the Second Piano Concerto (8.573629) was an American Record Guide Critic’s Choice and considered ‘compulsive listening’ by BBC Music Magazine ; with one Fanfare reviewer declaring that ‘Giltburg’s playing is kaleidoscopic, colourful, and full of élan.

Andreas Brantelid, Cello Bengt Forsberg, Piano The Royal Danish Orchestra Thomas Søndergård

Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor is a cornerstone of the cello repertoire, a product of the composer’s summer seclusion in the English countryside in 1919. A masterpiece of moods, it encompasses the world-weary and poignant but also the quicksilver and passionate. Two other cello works written at around the same time proved pivotal in their composers’ careers. John Ireland’s Cello Sonata in G minor fuses brooding, terse muscularity with lyricism and bravura, while Frank Bridge’s two-movement Cello Sonata in D minor reflects pre-War Romanticism coupled with wartime melancholy

and defiance. Key features: •

Cellist Andreas Brantelid is one of the most sought-after Scandinavian artists, winning worldwide critical acclaim for his performances. His Naxos albums include Russian Tales (8.573985) with – as with this current album – pianist Bengt Forsberg : ‘An exquisite recital

of Russian Romantic pieces that really glows’ ( The Strad ). He has also recorded a disc of Haydn’s and C.P.E. Bach’s Cello Concertos on 8.574365: ‘interpretations that are consistently erudite and musical’, wrote Fanfare . • His repertoire is famously wide and includes lesser-known and unjustly neglected composers. Among the composers he has recorded and played are Charles Alkan, Kaikhosru Sorabji, Camille Saint-Saëns, Charles Koechlin, Léon Boëllmann, Nikolai Medtner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Bedřich SMETANA (1824–1884) The Two Widows Adriana Kučerová, Kateřina Kněžíková Jana Sibera, Sopranos Pavol Breslik, Petr Nekoranec, Tenors • Adam Plachetka, Bass-baritone

Prague National Theatre Chorus Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra Robert Jindra

Considered a lesser-known gem of the operatic repertoire, Smetana’s Dvě vdovy (‘The Two Widows’) is set in a Bohemian country estate in which the contrasting personalities of recently widowed cousins Karolína and Anežka are tested by the attentions of gentleman- farmer Ladislav. Smetana’s expert theatrical craftsmanship seamlessly blends Czech dances and choruses with beautiful cavatina-like solos. With the humane warmth of its chamber-like comedy and deftly transparent orchestration, Smetana created a style of conversational opera in The Two Widows that was much admired by Richard Strauss. Key features: • Somewhat overshadowed by the more festive and extrovert The Bartered Bride , Smetana’s The Two Widows is only represented in its complete form on disc by a couple of recordings on the Supraphon label. This new release will widen appreciation for a lovely and innovative opera that set an early precedent for stage works that derive narrative flow from the natural cadence of speech rather than being punctuated with grand arias and set pieces. • While far less well-known internationally than some other operas of its period, The Two Widows has never entirely left the repertoire of Czech opera houses. Following a number of revisions after its premiere in 1874, this is an opera in which discipline of form, sensitivity to the Czech language and thematic economy has seen it sustained by a tradition that values its blend of charm and truth to character.

History of the Russian Piano Trio, Vol. 10 Soviet Avant-garde ROSLAVETS • SHOSTAKOVICH The Brahms Trio Nikolay Roslavets was one of the great musical innovators of the 1920s, described by Stravinsky as ‘the most interesting Russian composer of the 20th century,’ but vilified by the Soviet regime on account of his constant experimentation. His Piano Trio No. 4 is notable for its romantic and passionate spirit, and complex polyphony. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 is one of the most harrowing and revered of all his chamber works. The Piano Trio No. 1 , a remarkable composition for a 16-year-old student, is a work of romantic intensity cast in a musical language recognisably that of Shostakovich. Key features: • Vol. 5 in this series is on 8.574116: ‘The three composers on this disc could hardly find better advocates than The Brahms Trio. On a dull day, you might pass these scores by, but this top-class ensemble restore their magic. Together with the excellent fourth volume and the preceding three, this “History of the Russian Piano Trio” is a set to treasure’, wrote Gramophone . • These releases have subsequently been nominated for an International Classical Music Award (ICMA) and were named as the best albums of 2021 by Gramophone and American Record Guide . In 2022, The Brahms Trio was nominated for Opus Klassik Awards in the categories of Best Chamber Music Recording, Ensemble of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to the Expansion of the Repertoire.

The German pianist and teacher Theodor Kullak, a piano student of Carl Czerny among others, enjoyed a stellar career. His transcriptions, arrangements and studies have proved enduring, while his lesser-known original works contain an abundance of persuasive pianistic colours. The pensive and dramatic Grande Sonate in F sharp minor reveals the influence of Mendelssohn and Beethoven, and the Symphonie de Piano displays elements of Schumann as well as Kullak’s fondness for Italian models. Virtuoso panache and drawing room grace are also represented in the smaller works in this selection. Ukrainian pianist Roman Fediurko won a string of First Prizes at major competitions culminating, at just 18 years of age, in winning the Gold Medal and five special prizes at the prestigious Horowitz Competition, and this success has led to an international career, establishing him as one of the most promising artistic personalities of his generation. • Key features: • Vol. 2 which contains sonatas by Wilhelm Taubert is on 8.574585: ‘[Lucas] Wong’s inspired, lyrical and powerful performance does full justice to the sonatas’ wealth of ideas’ ( Pizzicato ).

About Yao Chen, Composer In works of various dimensions, Yao Chen seeks paths toward transcendence. His music, always ritual in nature, eschews contemporary vogues and instead aims at a timelessness and an otherness that exists beyond the standard categories – music for the moment, but also music for what has been and music for what lies ahead. Whether his work is brittle or forceful, or often both in coexistence, melancholy and a sense of wonder are recurring characteristics, as is an internationalist orientation grounded in a quest for maximal musical meaning. His perceptions on musical time, timbre, intonation, pulsation, and expression are always at frontiers: between the old and the new, between the East and the West, between irrational mysticism and rational logic. While devoting himself mainly to the field of contemporary art music, Yao also experiments with other genres, writing music for films and theatre productions. Cross- cultural and cross-disciplinary concepts permeate his creative inspiration and compositional output, presenting his understanding of the value of new music in enlivening global cultures.
