BoardConverting Serving the North American Corrugated and Folding Carton Industries for 40 years

Year In Review, Part I: Industry Invests In People And Progress BY ASHLEY PRAZYCH As the sun sets on another busy year in the North American corrugat- ed and folding carton industries, Board Converting News looks back at some of the most defining moments of 2025. The familiar mix of acquisitions, plant closures and new facility openings continued to make headlines, reflecting the steady churn that comes with a dy- namic and evolving industry. In addition, several companies marked

Manufacturing Hiring Slows To Pre-Pandemic Average According to the National Association of Man- ufacturers (NAM), manufacturing hiring activ- ity showed modest improvement in October, but overall conditions remain subdued as manufacturers continue to move cautiously amid slower activity. Job openings for manufacturing increased by 25,000 to 410,000 in October. The manu- facturing job openings rate rose to 3.1 percent from 2.9 percent in September but remained below the 3.4 percent level recorded a year earlier. At the same time, hiring activity softened. The hires rate for manufacturing slipped by one tenth of a percentage point to 2.4 per- cent, while the separations rate, which in- cludes quits, layoffs, and discharges, held steady at 2.6 percent. Although separations edged higher earlier in the year, turnover in manufacturing contin- ues to run below that of the broader nonfarm economy, indicating that most manufacturers are holding on to their existing workforce. However, the dip in hiring suggests many firms are choosing not to backfill open posi- tions as activity remains slow.

Others opened doors to customer experience facilities, and invested in education and learning opportunities to attract and develop the next generation of the corru- gated workforce. Below are some of the standout moments from the first six months of 2025. Data from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Sur- vey shows that durable goods manufacturing accounted for most of the increase in job openings, rising by 24,000 to 280,000 in October. Nondurable goods openings edged up by 1,000 to 130,000. Across the broader economy, total job openings ticked up to 7.7 million in October, an increase of 12,000 from September and 55,000 from a year earlier. The overall job openings rate remained unchanged at 4.6 percent, the same level as last year. While the labor market has eased back toward pre-pandemic norms, it remains relatively tight by historical standards.

One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved. Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety. Joseph J. Fenkel, Founder Of McLean Packaging, Passes Away Joseph J. Fenkel passed away peacefully at his home on December 4th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Joe lived 88 extraordinary years shaped by grit, generos- ity, humor, and a deep love of people, sports, boxes, and

never out of a hole no matter the score. His refusal to quit earned him the nickname “Bulldog,” a name that followed him into business and every corner in his life. In 1961, Joe founded McLean Packaging with his father and his partner, Ted Seidenberg. Together they built an in- dustry-leading company in set-up, corrugated, and folding boxes. Joe’s passion for the business ran deep. On week- ends he would walk the aisles of stores, sometimes alone and sometimes with a child in tow, obsessing over packag- ing. He meticulously inspected boxes, flipping them over in his hands and studying how they were made. His children and grandchildren worked summers in the factory, and Joe built McLean with the intention that it would stay in the fam- ily for generations. His generosity matched his work ethic. When a friend asked for support for a charitable cause, Joe always gave without hesitation. Joe was a true character and made an impression wher- ever he went. He loved sharing the highlight of his day, tell- ing stories about his children, or giving detailed breakdowns of the Phillies, Sixers, or Eagles. You could find him at Big 5 basketball games, cheering on his kids from the sidelines, or glued to Phillies broadcasts. He could not attend a game, eat breakfast at Hymie’s, or take a flight from PHL without running into people who knew him. He greeted everyone warmly, and made each person feel remembered. Joe lived a full and meaningful life with his wife, Mary, his friends, and his family. He will be deeply missed by every- one who knew him.

He loved the simple adven- tures of childhood: playing stickball with friends, sneaking into movie theaters, and spending time with his younger sister, Fran, and later his brother, Bill. Joe excelled athletically, especially in basketball. He played Varsity at Central High School and then at Penn State as a freshman, which was uncommon at the time. His toughness, quickness, and surprising ability to jump high for a short guard made him a standout. That same grit guided him as an adult. On the golf course, he was

Green Bay Packaging Earns ‘Green Master’ Designation, A 16-Year Streak Green Bay, Wisconsin based Green Bay Packaging has been recognized by The Sustainable Business Council as a ‘Green Master’ within its Green Masters Program®. Since all businesses are at different points in their sustain- ability journey, the Green Masters Program® categorizes participants into four status levels that reflect the degree to which sustainability has been integrated into their busi- ness model: Adapting, Advancing, Maturing, and Green Master. Green Master status signifies that Green Bay Packag- ing has identified and is effectively managing its materi- al sustainability issues and performance related to those issues, takes a comprehensive approach to sustainability, and is actively leading the transformation to a more sus- tainable society. Green Bay Packaging is a recognized leader in sustain- ability, continually investing in innovative initiatives and technologies that advance the boundaries of environmen- tal stewardship. Green Bay Packaging has launched a $1 billion energy modernization project at its kraft paper mill in Arkansas, aiming to achieve 100 percent onsite renew- able energy through a combined heat and power system, with plans to operate at 95 percent capacity and maintain 5 percent grid connectivity as a contingency power back- up. This investment is estimated to reduce Scope 1 green- house gas emissions by 40 percent and Scope 2 emis- sions by over 90 percent. Key upgrades include replacing the recovery and biomass boilers and installing an electric turbine generator to support decarbonization. The project will also boost biogenic energy use, raising companywide renewable energy consumption from 44 percent to 59 percent. Since the launch of the Green Master’s program in 2010, Green Bay Packaging has proudly earned 16 con- secutive years of recognition. This remains a key indicator of our progress and enduring commitment to sustainabili- ty, innovation, and excellence across the company. Participation in the program has highlighted innovative strategies for reducing environmental impact, while en- hancing the well-being of the community and workforce and promoting a culture of sustainability and social re- sponsibility. “The Green Masters Program® is a sustainability as- sessment and certification program that helps businesses define, prioritize, measure, and manage their social and environmental impacts, integrating sustainable practices into their strategy and operations. Aligned with interna- tionally recognized standards, it drives continual improve- ment, organizational alignment, and sustainable success. For over fifteen years, the program has helped hundreds of companies build credible and impactful sustainability initiatives. We are proud to see companies like Green Bay Packaging paving the way for a more sustainable future.”

ICPF Q4 Workforce Report Highlights Finding and Retaining Talent The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation’s fourth-quarter workforce update reinforces a message many box plants already know well: attracting and keeping good people remains one of the industry’s most pressing challenges. The Q4 2025 report focuses on two core pri- orities: finding talent and retaining it. Across both areas, one theme is consistent: Successful organizations share common traits, but none more import- ant than having the right people in place. Rather than pro- moting one-size-fits-all solutions, ICPF provides examples and resources that companies can adapt to fit their own operations, culture, and local labor markets. On the recruiting side, the focus is on meeting candi- dates where they are. With fewer people entering man- ufacturing roles through traditional pipelines, companies are encouraged to think more creatively about outreach. Partnering with a manufacturing staffing agency can pro- vide many employer benefits like bridging skills gaps and reducing hiring risks. Building relationships with local schools and technical programs, participating in community workforce initiatives, and rethinking how manufacturing careers are presented to younger audiences are all highlighted as effective strat- egies. Employer branding also plays a growing role in re-

cruitment. Prospective employees want to understand not just the job, but the company behind it. Plants that clearly communicate their values, culture, and commitment to em- ployees tend to attract candidates who are a better fit and more likely to stay. Retention remains an equally important part of the con- versation, reflecting the reality that keeping experienced employees can be just as challenging as hiring new ones. Competitive pay is important, but employees are looking for supportive leadership, opportunities to learn new skills, and a workplace where they feel valued and respected. Training and development continue to stand out as key retention tools. Structured onboarding, ongoing skills training, and clear expectations for growth help employees see a future within the organization. Investing in frontline supervisors and plant leadership often leads to stronger engagement and lower turnover across operations. Workplace flexibility, recognition, and open communi- cation also factor heavily into long-term retention. While solutions vary by plant size and location, listening to em- ployee feedback and making thoughtful adjustments can have a meaningful impact on morale and loyalty. The Q4 report reinforces that labor challenges are not going away, but they are manageable with the right strat- egies. By sharing ideas, focusing on people, and investing in leadership, ICPF continues to support corrugated pack- aging companies as they build strong teams for the future.
