CASES SURGE AS EOHU ENTERS RED ZONE

Eastern Ontario entered the red zone on Monday, having almost doubled the number of active cases in the region over two weeks. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis told media on Thursday afternoon that the seven-day rolling average, reproduction and positivity rates had taken the region out of the orange zone and into the red. The Ontario government officially announced the decision on Friday. Unlike Ottawa, which entered the red zone within 24 hours of the announcement, Dr. Roumeliotis said the weekend would provide time for businesses to prepare for added restrictions. The biggest changes between orange and red included a drop in indoor dining capacity from 100 people to either 50 or 50 percent of capacity (whichever is lower), as well as indoor gathering restrictions moving from 10 people to five. Sports and recreation facilities indoors moved from 50 people to 10, as did meeting and event spaces. Supermarkets needed to trade at 75 percent capacity, while other retailers were limited to 50 percent, and all team sport except for training was banned. Of the 332 active cases, 205 were vari- ants of concern. Some were linked to the South African variant, but the majority were cases of the mutation first reported in Brit- ain. Le Barreau de l’Ontario a révoqué le permis d’un avocat de Rockland pour avoir détourné l’argent de clients. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell has a new reserve fund for the senior government financial aid it has received now and may receive in future to deal with issues related to the pandemic. The eight mayors on the United Countries of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) gave unanimous approval to a recommendation from Director of Finance Valérie Parisien for creation of a COVID-19 reserve fund. During the past year the UCPR has received several hundred thousahds of dollars from the provincial government in support funding to deal with issues related to the pandemic. Some of those extra expenses include extra working hours for paramedics assisting UIF&BTUFSO0OUBSJP)FBMUI6OJU &0)6 UP deal with COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term- care and seniors retirement residences, and also ensuring that UCPR staff working in the field have adequate protective gear to keep them safe from the risk of contagion. The purpose of the new reserve fund is to provide a holding place for any unspent COVID-19 support funding left over at the end of 2020 and ensure that those funds remain available for use this year.

While there were 26 percent fewer colli- sions in 2020 compared to 2019, the fatality rate was 22 percent higher. Speed, alcohol or drug use, and driver inattention were among the leading factors in the crashes, while 55 deaths were linked to a lack of seatbelt use.
As the weather warms up and the snow vanishes, police have urged drivers to practise some basic spring safety checks on their vehicles. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) asked people to be safe on the roads and check the condition of their cars, especially if they had not been used recently. In particular, officers asked drivers to ensure all their lights were working, and to have their brake fluid, pads and rotors checked. After months of dealing with snow and mud, police recommended checking windshield washer fluid and replacing wiper blades, especially those that had been worn down.
