ULRs & WORKPLACE LEARNING UNION LEARNING REPS
WHAT IS A UNION LEARNING REP (ULR)? Union Learning Reps (ULRs) are volunteers who are willing to encourage and support other colleagues with learning in the workplace. ULRs are entitled to paid time off to carry out their role. This includes time for their own training. UNISON provides introductory training for Learning Reps, and there is potential follow-on training that you can undertake depending on your interests. ULRs can arrange training from our programme for free for their members and work with employers to arrange time off to study.
If you are interested in learning more about the ULR role, please contact your local branch or contact the education team on 028 9027 0190 or email educationni@unison.co.uk
ORGANISING WORKPLACE LEARNING
If you want to find out more about organising workplace learning, link in with your local branch officers or email educationni@unison.co.uk Around 66% of UNISON members who accessed our education programme last year did so with paid time off for study. You can arrange a UNISON course for you and your UNISON colleagues in your workplace. You can choose from anything in the programme or anything of interest or benefit to you (please see the list at the back of this book). Our only stipulation is that this isn’t something your employer should provide. Union Learning Reps (ULRs) can help UNISON members organise learning in the workplace and negotiate time off with the employer.

BOYCOTT, DIVESTMENT AND SANCTIONS Under international trade unionism, this course will look at why Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) is a workplace issue, promote ethical business practices, and seek to develop BDS strategies. Governments extensively use economic sanctions and divestment policies against other countries as tools to favour their economic and foreign policy. Civil society, including the trade union movement, also has a proud history of using boycotts, sanctions and divestment to challenging injustice, and promote human rights, equality and global solidarity. In the 1980’s unions were to the fore in the boycott and sanctions campaigns that helped end apartheid in South Africa. More recently, ICTU supported the call from a coalition of Palestinian civil society organisations and trade unions for an international BDS campaign to end Israeli apartheid, violence and the repression of the Palestinian people, and to contribute towards forcing Israel to comply with international law, UN resolutions, and to build a just peace in line with the calls of the BDS movement. This means taking a targeted approach to BDS, to maximise our impact. This course has been designed to give union reps, activists and officials the understanding, knowledge, resources and tools to promote and implement BDS campaigns in workplaces, unions and beyond.

INTRODUCTION TO MENTAL HEALTH Throughout this introductory course, learners will be introduced to mental health issues such as depression and suicide, and build an understanding of stress. Topics covered include an introduction to using appropriate language when supporting others and the importance of self-care as a tool to potentially improve mental health. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN & GIRLS The issue of violence against women and girls is not solely confined to the home. Between 73% and 98% of women and girls in NI experienced at least one form of violence or abuse in their lifetime. NI has the second highest rate of femicide in Europe. The issue can no longer remain ‘behind closed doors’ or be something that ‘just happens’. Many employers have policies to protect women at work from harm. Health and Safety legislation protects those who may be at risk of violence, and employers have a duty to protect their staff in the workplace. This session will take a look behind the statistics on the real impact of gender- based violence and examine critical emerging research on the upward trend of VAWG in NI. It will look at what constitutes violence, coercion and abuse, and what needs to be done to end an endemic problem for Northern Ireland and society in general. This workshop will also cover the outline of the support available and where to turn to for help.

PATHWAYS - RESIDENTIAL UNISON relies on hundreds of local reps in workplaces across Northern Ireland. These people want to play a role in standing up for colleagues and the service they work for. 85% of UNISON members are women, many of whom work part-time or in more than one job. However, as in society, that proportion of women is not reflected in the activist base or decision-making structures within branches. For women members who are interested in stepping forward and becoming a workplace rep, we run an overnight residential workshop to find out how the union works and how you can become more active.

BULLYING & HARASSMENT
Bullying and harassment are common and unacceptable problems in the workplace. Recent trade union research revealed that nearly a third of people have been bullied at work. The groups most likely to become victims of bullying and harassment are ethnic minority employees, women, and people with disabilities. This study added to the overwhelming evidence that sexual harassment in the workplace is persistent and widespread on a large scale. Workplace bullying and harassment can lead to ill-health and work-related stress, it affects morale and is the cause of untold misery to workers. The law makes it clear that all employees have the right to work in a safe environment. Employers are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe workplace, free from bullying, intimidation, and harassment. The population of NI is changing. Our population is moving from one dominated by children and young people to one where people aged over 50 will be in the majority. It is a time for celebration as more people are living longer than at any other time in history. From 2013 to 2023, the population aged 85 years and older increased from 33,000 to 41,900. Ageing also brings challenges, and biological factors can result in frailty and poorer health in older people. Sarcopenia, for example, is a term used to describe muscle loss. People over 30 naturally lose muscle and go on to lose an additional 3-5% of muscle per decade after the age of 60. People may lose 1-3% of muscle each year, with the rate of loss increasing in our 70s, 80s and 90s. The Growing Older, Growing Stronger workshop explores ways to combat frailty, focusing on conditions such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia and cognitive decline. This fun and participatory workshop is suitable for anyone interested in improving, maintaining, and safeguarding strength and wellbeing. Delivered by Dr Una Lynch. DEMENTIA: PART 1 AN INTRODUCTION TO DEMENTIA According to the NI Research and Statistics Agency (NISRA), there were 290 centenarians in Northern Ireland in 2025. The population aged over 90years is the fastest growing age group in our population. Babies born in the baby boom of the 1950s and 1960s are in their 60s and 70s. As the number of older people in the population increases, so do conditions and illnesses associated with age. It is for that reason that we are hearing about increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with dementia. An Introduction to Dementia is a half- day workshop which helps people to gain confidence in their understanding of dementia. The workshop covers a variety of topics, including the reasons behind the increasing number of people being diagnosed with dementia. Participants will learn about the different parts of the brain, how dementia impacts brain function, and ways to promote brain function, health and reduce the risk and impact of dementia. The training is designed to allay fears and anxiety around dementia. Using an informal and participatory style, the workshop is suitable for people who are interested in improving their own personal.
