UNISON College - Member Learning Programme 2026

Member Learning Courses APRIL 2026

DEMENTIA: PART 1 AN INTRODUCTION TO DEMENTIA According to the NI Research and Statistics Agency (NISRA), there were 290 centenarians in Northern Ireland in 2025. The population aged over 90years is the fastest growing age group in our population. Babies born in the baby boom of the 1950s and 1960s are in their 60s and 70s. As the number of older people in the population increases, so do conditions and illnesses associated with age. It is for that reason that we are hearing about increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with dementia. An Introduction to Dementia is a half- day workshop which helps people to gain confidence in their understanding of dementia. The workshop covers a variety of topics, including the reasons behind the increasing number of people being diagnosed with dementia. Participants will learn about the different parts of the brain, how dementia impacts brain function, and ways to promote brain function, health and reduce the risk and impact of dementia. The training is designed to allay fears and anxiety around dementia. Using an informal and participatory style, the workshop is suitable for people who are interested in improving their own personal. Understanding of dementia, people who have a family member or friend with dementia, and health care professionals who are caring for people who have dementia. Delivered by Dr Una Lynch. A registered Public Health Nurse for over 30 years, she has an MSc from Trinity College Dublin and Doctorate in Governance from Queen’s University, Belfast.
