Member Learning Courses APRIL 2026
THE FIRST 1,000 DAYS This one-day course on maternal and infant health and wellbeing is designed for everyone - parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, health professionals, policy makers, activists and people who might one day become parents. Throughout the day, participants will learn why pregnancy and the first two years are vital in giving children the best start in life. Experiences in the first 1,000 days of life, including pregnancy, last a lifetime. The course will help people understand why we need to start thinking of babies as the teenagers, adults and pensioners of the future and why investment in maternal health and childcare is critical to the health of society. Using informal, fun methods and a participatory approach, participants will learn about child development, the role of the environment, nutrition and human connection in enabling babies to grow and develop. The course will include topics such as bonding and attachment, mental health, emotional development, physical development, play and communication. The course will also explore the impact of other issues, including housing, poverty and domestic abuse, during the first 1,000 days of life. Participants will not be required to write notes; learning will be experiential and through discussion. Delivered by Dr Una Lynch A registered Public Health Nurse for over 30 years, she has an MSc from Trinity College Dublin and a Doctorate in Governance from Queen’s University, Belfast.
