Closing a Successful Spring Period
“We can see up to a 20 per cent increase in revenue when a conference like AMSA is in.”
We are coming to the end of a successful Spring season in business events, where over 5300 delegates have already attended conferences during the period. November will welcome an additional 3500 delegates, rounding out the spring total to 8800 delegates, 26,160 hotel room nights booked, and $27.5m generated in Estimated Economic Impact. September was hallmarked by the overwhelmingly successful Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) conference, which welcomed over 900 delegates from 12 countries to Hobart from the 15th to the 20th. Its presence had a significant impact on Hobart’s hospitality sector.
Continuing to bring in conferences that have an immediate impact on the hospitality sector is key for us here at BET. This financial year, as part of our 5-Year Strategic Plan, we’re focused on growth and our goal of increasing the direct expenditure of business events from $199M to $300M by 2028. In addition to the immediate impact of visiting delegates, research has shown that 28 per cent also bring family and/or friends and 89 per cent intend to return within three years. BET will continue to secure conferences that bring new eyes to the state, and the high quality of Tasmania’s hospitality sector is key in encouraging their revisitation, which has a significant impact on the entire economy in the long term. BET Members can use the online calendar to remain aware of incoming conferences, but here are a few to look out for this month: 600 delegates - Australian Association of Gerontology National Conference 2024 • 17th – 19th in Hobart • 500 delegates - Bus Industry Confederation National Conference 2024 12th – 15th in Hobart •
