We are so blessed to be living here in Pensacola; and with all of the improvements, if you haven’t been downtown in a while, you will be in for quite a surprise. Visit historic downtown this time of year and you’ll feel the holiday spirit when you see Palafox Street lit up with thousands of white lights. Though we don’t have snow, our Christmas spirit isn’t dulled by the sunshine. In fact, it’s brightened when Pensacola becomes a winter wonderland. This month, my family and I are enjoying the magic of the holidays in Pensacola, and I encourage you to do the same. We like to go to Winterfest at least once, and because it happens all season long, there are plenty of opportunities to see downtown decked out and participate in some of the fun events, like the Christmas Parade. It’s a perfect activity if you’re looking for something the little ones will enjoy. My wife and I also love going to Gallery Nights downtown. Once a month, the streets are closed to cars, stores stay open late, and an array of galleries, shops, and restaurants open their doors to art lovers. Different artists are featured each month, and we appreciate the creative variety we get to see. It’s a nice evening to meet up with friends and celebrate local talent. It is amazing to see how it has grown and how many people come out to participate. Also on our list is the New Year’s Pelican Drop. Don’t worry, no animals are harmed in this event — the pelican is only a sculpture. The huge illuminated bird is dropped twice on New Year’s Eve: once for kids, and again for adults at midnight.
Callaway Gardens in Warm Springs, Georgia. During the holidays, they feature Fantasy in Lights. Just like it sounds, thousands of lights illuminate natural wonders, and it’s a magical experience. There’s a reason National Geographic put it on the international list of “Top 10 Places to See Holiday Lights.” Closer to home, Bellingrath Gardens (located in Mobile) is not to be missed, either. More than 3 million lights create an otherworldly experience. And even closer is the Gulf Breeze Zoo, which hosts a holiday light celebration that is fun for the whole family. Having spent years in the military, traveling around the world, we were able to experience Christmas wherever we were stationed. But the best part of the holidays for us is spending time with family and friends. These days, our families are spread out across the country, so we try to get together whenever we can, either meeting in the middle or taking turns visiting one another. It’s challenging to make the cross-country trips, but it’s worth it for the time together. There are more things happening in Pensacola than we can possibly list, so go online and see what you find. With so many exciting things to do around town, it might be hard to choose, but putting just one on your calendar will be a fun excuse to go downtown with the family and make an evening of it.
From our family and everyone at Taylor Dental, we wish you a merry Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year!
Beyond our downtown activities, our neighbors also have some holiday events to see. If you have a chance to get away for a few days, I highly recommend the
