were to obey Him by being born again. After they became Christians, they were baptized and brought to the place where their testimony in Christ was made public. Thus it was made clear that theirs was a com plete break with Judaism and all of its dead works. In Acts 2:47 it is stated: “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved [were being saved].” These people were not only added to the body of Christ when they were born again, but also they became part of a local congregation in the city of Jerusalem. The early Christians were very active in their witness for Jesus Christ. They were fanning out everywhere, witnessing to people about the Lord. The desire of God for the local church is that its membership should be born again. There’s nothing worse, in the light of God’s Word, than a church where there’s no concern by its membership for people who join as to whether they’ve ever been saved or not. No wonder we’re having such difliculty in the church today. Let there be no mistake; in days like these we need the church.
brought together, we generally or ganize them into what is known as a local church. This is what is done on the mission fields of the world. This is what happened on the day of Pentecost. Not only did the Holy Spirit take everyone who believed and put them into the celestial, heav enly Body of Christ, but also Paul went everywhere as related in the book of the Acts, establishing local individual churches and assemblies. The people in Acts 2 were bap tized because they had already been saved. Baptism is a testimony to the world of an inward change of heart. Baptism is an act of obedience to the command of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:18-20). The re sponsibility of these people on the day of Pentecost was clear. They
