Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (LBW) Has it all... The SAINTS Family has a STRONG history and a story... LBW Community College was named in memory of Alabama’s first elected female governor, Lurleen Burns Wallace. In late 1967, the State Board of Education authorized the development of a two-year college to be located in Andalusia. Lurleen Wallace was in office only 16 months before her death. Due to her tremendous popularity and positive influence and support for important work to improve mental health facilities, the state’s natural and recreational facilities, and care for the elderly, she was often referred to as a “saintly lady.” A year following the death of Gov. Wallace, LBW opened its doors for the first class of students. Under the leadership of Harolyn Steele, LBW’s first publicity employee, collegiate representatives selected “Saints” as the designation for the student-body.

ATHLETE ALUMNUS NOW PRESIDENT

On December 1, 2020, Dr. Kelley was appointed President of LBW Community College. He firmly believes, “College is for Everyone.” “It may look different for some, but LBW is here to help our students meet their educational goals no matter their situation.” “Staying close to family and friends was important to me when choosing my path for higher education. The people that I met at LBW made a huge impact on my life and future.” — Dr. Brock Kelley, 2007 A.S. Graduate LBW faculty and staff provide world-class, affordable education and training for our diverse community through dual enrollment, technical training, 2-to-4-year transfer, adult education, and workforce development. The Saints Family consists of high school students, tradi - tional and non-traditional college students, veterans, and incumbent workers. “Here at LBW, we offer something for you. Your decision to join the Saints Family will make a lifelong impact.”

President Dr. Brock Kelley is a product of the Alabama Community College System. A graduate of Opp High School, Dr. Kelley was a member of the Saints Baseball Team before transferring to Troy University. “I know first-hand how the two-year college system can change the lives of students,” he said.

AMBASSADOR AND ALUMNA

Anna McKinney was the College’s first registrant for the Concurrent Enrollment pro- gram now offered. “It will be reward - ing to further my education while taking my general studies at LBW and delving into the courses more focused on my major,” she said.

LBW freshman Anna McKinney and her mother Mrs. Tammy McKinney are both proud members of the Saints Family. Anna is a 2022-2023 Ambassador who chose to attend LBW on the Andalusia campus because of “the friendly and welcoming atmosphere it exudes.” Mrs. McKinney, a retired 32-year elementary education veteran, started her higher ed studies at LBW in 1986. “Choosing to attend LBW was such a positive experience. Smaller class sizes allowed me to have more individualized attention from instructors,” she said. “It is an honor and privilege to be an LBW Alumna. Having our daughter, Anna, attend LBW makes us extremely proud. Seeing her grow, learn, and mature lets us know she is RECRUITER AND DUAL ENROLLEE Director of Student Recruitment, Heather Owen started in her position at LBW over 15 years ago. “I started working at LBW in August of 2006, two months after my son Jackson was born,” she said. “To say that being a member of the Saints Family is an important part of my life would be an understatement. As a lifelong college recruiter, my passion has always been to help students search for their career pathways and plan for success in higher education.” -Heather Owen, LBW Director of Student Recruitment Jackson Owen, a current high school junior and LBW Dual Enrollment student, started taking college classes the summer after his freshman year. ready for the next level.” — Tammy McKinney, 1988 A.A. Graduate

Some of the most impactful things Mrs. McKinney learned at LBW that guided her in her career as an educator were “learning to step outside my comfort zone, interact with people with diverse backgrounds, and use critical thinking and communication skills effectively.” Her daughter Anna says as a student and college ambas - sador she is looking forward to developing those exact skills and undergoing those experiences. “I can’t wait to build new relationships with fellow students and staff members. I’m ready to begin this new, exciting portion of my life!”

“I enrolled in three classes that summer,” he said. “The instructors were great, and it was convenient for me to take college courses online and in my hometown while I was on summer break.”

Jackson will graduate from Andalusia High School in 2024 with over 30 college credits and a Computer User Support Specialist Certificate from LBW. “I’m proud of him for getting ahead in his college career,” Mrs. Owen said. “He has done a remarkable job taking advantage of LBW courses offered on his high school campus, online, and on-campus during summer mini-terms.” Mrs. Heather Owen is always here to help you with your decision for higher education.
