Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (LBW) Has it all... The SAINTS Family has a STRONG history and a story... LBW Community College was named in memory of Alabama’s first elected female governor, Lurleen Burns Wallace. In late 1967, the State Board of Education authorized the development of a two-year college to be located in Andalusia. Lurleen Wallace was in office only 16 months before her death. Due to her tremendous popularity and positive influence and support for important work to improve mental health facilities, the state’s natural and recreational facilities, and care for the elderly, she was often referred to as a “saintly lady.” A year following the death of Gov. Wallace, LBW opened its doors for the first class of students. Under the leadership of Harolyn Steele, LBW’s first publicity employee, collegiate representatives selected “Saints” as the designation for the student-body.
