CAMPUS COMMONS

Even with the constant eye rolls from my kids, parenting has been one of my most incredible adventures. Raising three grown children has been nothing short of a learning experience for us as parents. One important lesson we have learned on this journey is the value of setting boundaries based on behavior and attitudes, regardless of age. These boundaries have taught our children how to act responsibly and respectfully in society. Parent’s Day falls in July this year, and I want to share a few valuable lessons my wife and I have taught our children throughout the years. RESPECT Since they were very young, we have focused on instilling respect in our children. We have set rules and consistently stuck to them, even though, at times, it got tough not to give in to their little whims and demands, especially when they were little. My wife and I knew that maintaining these boundaries was crucial for their development, and we held onto the fact that one day they would thank us for this. It’s true what they say about girls maturing faster than boys — my 16-year-old son still seems to be figuring it out, but my girls have already picked up on this trait. RESPONSIBILITY Teaching them essential life skills and responsibility was also vital to our parenting approach. We involved them in household chores, such as doing the dishes and the laundry. These tasks seem simple but will help them assume responsibility during adulthood. They have learned to care for themselves and understand the value of contributing to a functioning household. Teaching them how credit cards work, how to manage their money, and how to interview for a job are all crucial skills they need to function in today’s fast-paced world. POWERFUL PARENTING TEACHING LIFE LESSONS TO OUR CHILDREN

ACCOUNTABILITY As parents, we believe our job is to teach our children how to do things for themselves, not to do everything for them, as that diminishes the whole point of growing up and becoming adults. This approach helped them understand the importance of respecting limits and that every action has consequences. DISCIPLINE We want our children to become stable adults, and that only comes through hard work and discipline. Our children know that nothing good in life comes easy; you must work hard to get there. That applies to almost everything in life, whether it be in their personal or professional lives. If you want that job, house, car, or steady life we all dream of, it doesn’t just come naturally. The bottom line is that no one will do it for you; you must go out there and get it for yourself. Our ultimate goal as parents has always been to raise kind, hardworking individuals. After all, we know our kids are imperfect and do not come with a handbook. Parenting can be challenging, but as long as our children turn out to be good people, we know we did something right! We want our kids to know we will always be there to guide them, no matter what. Watching them grow into good-hearted people makes the journey of parenting all worthwhile.

FROM BOOK CLUB TO BIG BUSINESS

How Celebrities Influence Reading Culture for Profit

Since Oprah Winfrey debuted her famed book club in 1996, many celebrities have followed suit, recommending books on their websites and social media feeds. While a celebrity recommendation is a boon for an author’s sales, it also profits the person suggesting it. Here are three celebrities using their influence to boost book sales — and their own businesses. GWYNETH PALTROW The Oscar-winning actress owns a lifestyle and supplements brand called Goop, which is estimated to be worth around $250 million. Taking heed of other celebrities’ examples, Paltrow started her book club to promote books through her company’s website and on her Instagram profile. The titles complement the aims of her business, including guest opportunities and content for her podcast. The book club helps catapult Paltrow’s business beyond the fashion and film industries. REESE WITHERSPOON As the star actress in numerous films like “Legally Blonde” and “Walk the Line,” Witherspoon was already a household name when she began recommending books on social media to her more than 2.5 million followers. In addition to being an actress and avid reader, Witherspoon

also ran Hello Sunshine, a massively successful production company. After promoting books like Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild,” Delia Owens’ “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and “Daisy Jones & the Six” by Taylor Reid, her production company adapted them to the silver screen. In 2014, Witherspoon was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as the lead in the film adaptation of “Wild,” which she also produced. As a result of this lucrative business model, Witherspoon managed to sell Hello Sunshine for a reported $900 million in August 2021. EMMA ROBERTS Roberts started her Belletrist book club in 2017 alongside her friend Karah Preiss. Then, in 2019, following Reese’s footsteps, Emma started an entertainment company, Belletrist Productions. Belletrist has since produced the hit shows “First Kill” with Netflix and “Tell Me Lies” with Hulu, with the goal of creating more literary adaptations in the future. It is great that celebrities encourage people to read, but they do not do so selflessly. In fact, the primary motivation, in many cases, is to bolster their own acting and production careers or to build upon their existing lifestyle brands. We shouldn’t feel guilty for reading what they recommend, but we should realize their picks aren’t always based on what makes the best read.

THE PREPARATION FOR TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY

No one likes to undergo surgery, as it can be scary, uncertain, and painful. Joint replacements are standard procedures that involve removing parts of an arthritic or damaged joint and replacing them with a metal, plastic, or ceramic prosthesis designed to replicate the function of a healthy joint. While hip and knee replacements are the most common joint replacement surgeries, this procedure can also be performed on the ankle, wrist, shoulder, and elbow.

outpatient surgery center. The damaged cartilage and bone are replaced with prosthetic components. For example, in hip replacement surgery, the damaged ball of the femur is replaced with a metal ball on a metal stem fitted into the femur, and a plastic socket is implanted into the pelvis. RECOVERY PROCESS The recovery process varies for each individual but generally involves early use of the new joint. While some pain is expected due to muscle weakness, body adjustment, and tissue healing, this is usually resolved within a few months. Exercise is crucial for recovery, and doctors or physical

The human body has two kinds of joints: Hinge joints like the knees and fingers allow bending and straightening. Ball-

and-socket joints like the hips and shoulders allow greater movement because the rounded end of one bone fits into the cup-shaped end of another. Total joint replacement is recommended when the damage to cartilage lining the ends of bones causes severe pain and disability. When non-surgical treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and activity modification fail to alleviate pain and disability, a doctor may suggest total joint replacement.
