Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called EOAT (End of Arm Tooling) or Grippers? Robots have elbows & wrists, so the end of an arm has grippers (fingers). The gripper is the interface between the robot and work piece. Can I use Vektek’s Universal Grippers for retrofitting, or only new applications? Vektek’s Universal Grippers can be used in both retrofit and new applications. Why would I want to use a short stroke gripper? It has more force. What IP rating does the dust protection add to the gripper? It takes the IP from IP40 to IP64. What if I need more gripping force with the same or smaller size unit? Ask for force intensified version “TDM” as an option. Can I use these on a cobot? Yes, all universal grippers need to have an adapter plate to mount to a cobot. What if I have a high temp application? Grippers with the “HT” version can handle applications up to 130°C. Do you offer a gripper that has an IP67 rating? We do, order 2 jaw gripper VSO, or the 3 jaw VZO. Our IP67 Rated grippers do not require a third air line for positive pressure.

Do you have any anti-corrosion grippers? Yes, request the Anti-Corrosion version “AC” as an option. What options do you have for position sensing? We offer magnetic switches for the C-slots as well as provisions for mounting inductive proximity switches. All grippers use the same c-slot size. Can we limit the amount of stroke? The VGP gripper in sizes 64 and 100 has the “AST” option to limit stroke length. What flexibility is there in allowing the gripper to be used in a family of parts or sizes? Order option “VUS” which is our intermediate adjustable jaw offering more range to the gripper and easily adjusting for different size parts. Also, you can order “VY” quick change jaw system allowing you to swap fingers out easily. Do I need to provide my own fingers for the gripper? We do have pre-drilled finger blanks available in steel & aluminum. Order option “VS”. What safeguard do you have to prevent dropping a part in the event of a pressure loss? We have two options. The VMP valve will maintain air pressure in the gripper if the main pressure is lost, or the normally open “MA” and normally closed “MC” gripper variants will use spring force to hold the part.

VY-A & B Quick Change Jaw System for VGP & VZP Universal Grippers The VY quick-change jaw system enables finger to be changed on the gripper manually and rapidly. An adapter (VY-A) and a base (VY-B) are required for each gripper jaw. The VY consists of a base, which is stationary fixed to the gripper, and two adapter pins, which are to be fastened to the fingers allowing easy replacement. The form-fit locking mechanism ensures a fast exchange of the gripper fingers. The evenness in height of the BASE is +/- 0.05 mm and the replacement accuracy of a finger in connection with the adapter is +/-0.02 mm. Attention must be given to the maximum permissible finger length and the load values for the gripper size used (See chart on following page). Caution: the locking surfaces must be kept free of grease and oil.

Plug & Play Approach The ‘design to install’ phase of a traditional pneumatic EOAT setup could take up to 3 weeks. The pneumagiQ Plug & Play approach now brings down the time to just a fraction of that, using the pneumagiQ EOAT interface. Control of the pneumagiQ EOAT interface is accomplished by URCap for Universal Robots or Modbus RTU (RS-485).
