These days, age is really just a number: 40 is the new 30, 50 is the new 40 and reaching the 100 mark is no longer an impossible task. In fact, centenarians are living longer because they are leading much healthier lives. The CDC’s State of Aging and Health in America reports that “the current growth in the number and proportion of older adults living in the United States is unprecedented in our nation’s history. Two factors—longer lives and aging baby boomers—will double the popula- tion of Americans aged 65 or older during the next 25 years.” The National Institute of Aging says it best: “People in the U.S. are living longer than ever be- fore. The 2010 Census Bureau’s Age and Sex Composition estimates over 53 thou- sand centenarians in 2011, up from 50 thousand just a decade earlier. “They have been the fastest-growing seg- ment of our population in terms of age,” explained the Boston University New England Centenarian Study.
