W e carefully searched through his past experiences. He needed the answer for his ceaseless efforts and continual urgency in taking the story of Jesus to anyone who would stop and listen. He may have been asked many times, “ Paul, why not stay in Corinth and continue to teach us?” “Why face the hardships and dangers in travel and strange cities?” “Why take the insults of unbelieving Jews and pagans?” There was just one answer. He wrote it to the Christians at Corinth: “ That I might gain the more [for Christ]” (I Cor. 9:19b). He wouldn’t even accept living ex penses. He was giving this as a gift —free—no cost whatsoever “ This is my privilege,” he said. He made himself a bondservant; to the weak he appeared common and ordinary. “ I have become all things to all men that I might by all means save some.” This was the great incentive for the Apostle Paul’s onward drive to new areas and people, across con tinents and to strange cities. To win a few was not enough. This word must be heard by the multitudes, anywhere. What is your incentive to witness to others? Is it a duty, or the duty of every Christian? Why are you concerned about the pupil in your Sunday school class who does not seem to be interested in what you teach? Why did you take your busy time to stop at a pupil’s home to inquire about his absence? Why do you take your time to go to church meetings and spend hours in study and preparation? Have you consid ered giving up a number of these activities because your service is not appreciated or because you do not see any worth-while results? The incentive to keep you going when you are discouraged and think ing of giving up is your purpose for your service. Behind your work there must be a great goal. This is the goal of all witnessing and personal evangelism. The persons with whom you live, work or serve need to be won for Christ. This is the great incentive which drove Paul from country to country, and from city to city. The great incentive is, “ By all means save some.”
