their students to comp l e te their manuals. One teacher of junior high boys who was not having any success in getting manuals completed de cided to do something about it. He began to use the pupils’ book in class each Sunday, even teaching the entire lesson from it. To his happy surprise, he found that more than 90% of his pupils began to do the assigned work in the books and to bring them to class. He had demon strated to the members of his class that the manual was important. The wise teacher will also solicit the co-operation of the parents in getting the books completed each week. A presentation to the parents at the beginning of each quarter of the new course to be studied is cer tain to be helpful. This can be done at a carefully planned PTF (Parent Teachers Fellowship) meeting. IDEAS T H A T W O R K 1. Pastor Richard Swank writes, “ Sometimes it seems difficult to get the Sunday school teachers to come early f o r classes. We started a TEMPO club in our church and it has proven to be a real blessing . . . Teachers Early Morning Prayer Ob servance. Tempo serves two pur poses. It brings our teachers and workers to church early, and it has created a oneness of Spirit that only can be found when workers unite in prayer together for God’s bless ing.” Start a TEMPO PRAYER GROUP in your church and it will set the Tempo for the day! 2. Rev. Roy Knuteson has an idea! It is an incentive for ABSEN TEE FOLLOW-UP VISITATION. He calls it the “ Buried Treasure.” The “ Treasure” (a gift-wrapped box) is placed in the home of one absentee by the Departmental Sec retary or Superintendent. This is done early in the week. Teachers are urged to call on each absentee and asked to find the “ Buried Treasure.” The following Sunday a check is made during the opening sessions of Sunday school to see who has found and returned the treasure. During the eight-week program set aside by the Sunday school, genuine excite ment and enthusiasm was generated. Even the ABSENTEES loved it and many were reclaimed. Teachers who did not call were really put “ on the spot,” when the Superintendent an nounced in whose home the treasure was buried. The teacher and the student involved were able to open and keep the treasure after it was returned to the class. The entire program was one which became a real conversation piece and an AB SENTEE CUTTER-DOWNER!

Q. Why are we losing our junior high boys? How can we b'etter reach, teach and hold them? A. This question reminds me of a shotgun — it’s double-barreled and loaded! In a nation-wide survey con ducted recently, several reasons were found for the dropping out of teen agers. The two main reasons given were: 1. The church did not provide enough program for them. 2. The church did not give them enough to do. In the light of these findings, here are several suggestions to help in reaching and holding these young teens: First, the program provided should be relevant to their needs. It should be on their interest level and have teen appeal. Next, opportunities for participation and service must be given. Someone has well said, “ If you don’t use them, you are sure to lose them!” They should be given opportunities to hold offices in their group, to work in the church, to carry out community projects (i.e., party for underprivileged children) and to help in world-wide mission projects (i.e., collect items for mis sionaries). Fi na l l y , the chu r ch should seek to improve every part of its program leading up to the teen years. By keeping each link in the chain of departments strong, the church will better be able to hold and work with its young people. Q. Our young people are not com pleting their work books at home. How can we encourage them to do this ? A. It may be well to begin the reply to this question by pointing out that the “ proper” designation today for work books, is pupils’ manuals. Any thing associated with work in this leisure-conscious age is definitely to be avoided! In spite of this, some teachers are successful in getting
