G&P DIGEST

HERE’S TO ANOTHER FANTASTIC SCHOOLYEAR

Remembering My Girls’ First Move Ins This semester, my oldest daughter, Rachel, is a junior at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, and my youngest daughter, Anna, started her first year at Fordham up in the Bronx.

1/2 hours away. When we finally got there, it was around midnight. They didn’t have a specific time we had to be there, but we had to wait until the following morning to unload her things, as the campus’s doors weren’t open. We had booked a hotel for the night, so we could be at the campus to unload right when the doors opened up. While we were checking in, another father and daughter came in behind us, and I overheard them saying, “That was really good, and no one else was there!” My ears immediately perked up. I went over and asked them what they were talking about, and the father explained that they had just finished unpacking his daughter’s things at Blacksburg’s dorms. I asked, “What do you mean? We can’t start until tomorrow morning.” He tells me, “Oh, no no no, the card works. You can do it right now.” things. I think the only downside to the whole thing was that the dorm had no elevators, and she was on the third floor. But it was midnight and not nearly as uncomfortably hot as it was going to be the following day at noon. We had everything unpacked in the next 2 1/2 hours and, when everyone else was struggling through the heat the next day, Rachel had finished setting all her things up. This year, we didn’t have to worry about Rachel at all; being a junior now, she’s got it down. Ben’s having a great time at home all by himself, but like any 13-year-old, he wasn’t looking forward to another school semester. We finished checking in, drove right over to the dorms, and started unpacking Rachel’s

My son, Ben, just started eighth grade. We’re a couple months into this year’s school semester, but I’ve been thinking a lot about getting everyone settled in those first weeks. I think the most interesting move was taking Anna to Fordham and dropping her off. The people there were something like a military operation; everything was on time and happened without a single hiccup! Each student had an assigned time they had to be there, and we decided it’d be best to show up early. When we got there, before I even had a chance to park the car, I had already talked to three people who were telling me where to go: “You’re here early? No problem! Here’s what you’ll do …” When we finally pulled up to the dorms, the woman in charge came over to the car and asked who we were. She blew a whistle, and 30 Fordham “help you move in” students cheered and descended on the car. In 10 minutes, what had taken me 4–5 hours to load was all unpacked and taken up to Anna’s room. It was such a relief to have so much help. It gave us plenty of time to help Anna set up her room and spend time together before my wife and I had to head back home. Anna’s move in was pretty different from Rachel’s first move-in day at Blacksburg. The biggest thing was that Blacksburg is seven hours away, whereas Fordham is only 1

He wanted his summer to last a bit longer so he could have more time hanging out with his crew, practicing the drums with his band, and having a great time at Boy Scouts camp. Now, even though he has the house to himself, he’s faced with homework and Mom and Dad asking him how his day at school was every day. Every year, we take a picture in front of the house as a family, and I’m always amazed by how much the kids have grown. I’m very proud of them, and I’m hoping that this school semester is the best for all three of them. Sam M. Gaylord

Ben Gaylord was the master of ceremonies for Troop 33’s court of honor. Ben was a Cub Scout for four years and has now been a Boy Scout for three years. He is pictured here at the court of honor with Rich Bassett, advancement chair.

“I found a stray kitten about six years ago and took her to the shelter. When I saw all the animals that were looking for homes and care, I couldn’t help but get involved. I started out helping with fundraising at EASEL, and after about a year or so, I helped run the fundraising committee and volunteered in various other aspects of the shelter.” –Bria Merlino pony tails that they will send to “Wigs for Kids” in order to make THREE wigs for children in need! I am very happy that I am able to share this story with everyone in the hopes that someone else will feel the same passion and endeavor to do the same.” -Kim Kim, our senior legal assistant in workers’ comp, cut and donated her hair after years of growing to be used for wigs for children with cancer. “Bria referred me to Studio One, Route 1, Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a local hair studio where everyone is so nice and friendly, offering hot and cold beverages, etc. They really make you feel at home in this salon. The owner and stylist, Lori, was able to cut three large, 17-inch-long

The leaves are turning, the weather is changing, and the holidays are right around the corner, which means it’s time to bring out the fall decor! To make this season especially memorable for your family, create your own decorations with these fun ideas below. PINE CONE PAINTING Go on a family walk through the park to pick up a few fallen pine cones or take a quick trip to the store to buy a bag. Once everyone has their own hand-picked pine cone, grab a paintbrush and a few colors and have at it! For extra flair, add some fixings like glitter, beads, sequins, string, and more. LEAF PAINTING Take a trip outside with the kids to pick out some large, unbroken leaves, then head back inside and get creative! You can pull out the construction paper and paint trees, using handprints and “arm prints” as the trunks and branches. Paint the leaves you found to spruce up your trees or use them as decorations on their own. You can also use them for leaf printing or leaf pressing. FUN FINGER FOOD When you’ve got multiple friends and family members coming over and you need snacks, edible decorations are the way to go. You can get a little creative and make elaborate treats, or you can opt for delicious and easy-to-make finger foods with your kids. A good starting treat for your family is a batch of pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats. Add orange food coloring to the mix and get your kids to shape the treats like pumpkins before using a few pretzel sticks to make sturdy stems. THANKSGIVING CRAFTS Thanksgiving is only a month away, and your possibilities for holiday- themed crafts are endless with just a few supplies like paper, scissors, markers, and string. You can make turkey placemats, tissue paper trees, pumpkin garlands, paper pumpkins, or leaf mobiles to hang from the ceiling. Compile a list of ideas and have your kids pick out which craft they want to do first, then get to work together to create as many decorations as you want to display for Turkey Day.

With these engaging craft ideas, the whole family will be eager to make their own decorations and show them off for months to come!

The Real Legend of Sleepy Hollow

HAYRIDES AND HEADLESS HORSEMEN

Halloween Celebrations in Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive!

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, NewYork, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October.

But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins. If you want a real Halloween experience, you can’t go wrong in Sleepy Hollow. Just be careful not to lose your head!
