Essays: 0-5 Points Awarded The purpose of the essay questions is to determine an applicant’s understanding of, and dedication to, the nursing profession. Completed essays are submitted through the applicant portal. Essays are evaluated and points are awarded on a scale of 0-5. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as GPT chat to write your essays is not allowed. Essays are reviewed for authenticity during the application process. the use of AI tools may result in the rejection of the essays.
Essay Instructions
• Place name at the top of each essay • Essays should be typed, double-spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font
• Title each essay with the question • Begin each essay on a separate page • Essays must be a minimum of two pages and no more than 4 pages Essay Questions 1. What is your understanding of a registered nurse and why have you chosen to pursue nursing as a career 2. What three qualities do you feel every nurse should possess and why 3. What life experiences have led you toward the nursing field 4. Explain in detail how you will commit to the demands and responsibilities of a nursing program Letter of Recommendation One letter of recommendation is required that includes contact information. Acceptable letters of recommendation may include current or previous supervisors, hiring managers, or academic instructors. Transcripts Unofficial transcripts must be submitted if the applicant is requesting credits to be evaluated for transfer. Official transcripts must be submitted to the registrar at the time of acceptance. See “Transfer Credit” on the following page of this Information Packet. Resume Applicants must provide a one (1) page current resume detailing their professional and educational experience.

SELECTION PROCESS - POINT SYSTEM Applicants must achieve an overall score of 71% or higher on the TEAS exam to be eligible to apply for the program. When all required steps in the process have been completed, the application is reviewed by the college. The application must be awarded a minimum of 7 points to continue on to the panel interview. Essays are reviewed and evaluated for all applicants who receive a minimum of 2 points on their TEAS exam. Evaluated essays are awarded 0-5 points. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 7 points to continue in the process. Panel Interview: 0-5 Points Awarded

A panel interview is conducted by administrators employed at the College. Applicants considered for this interview will receive additional information prior to the interview. Final Selection: 12 -15 Points Applicants awarded at least 12 out of 15 possible points will be accepted into the progam. Deferring a Start Date Students who wish to defer their start date after being accepted will be placed on a waitlist for a seat in the next cohort. Sumner College cannot guarantee a seat will be available in the next cohort.
