Odor Control Methods of the Past Current Products on the Market: • Masking Agents – Examples: Glade, Febreze, Fogging Agents. These work like a perfume; odors come back as they are not eliminated. • Precipitators/Encapsulation – Examples: Freshwave, Nobles ION – Surround odor molecule using static electricity, drops to the floor. Odors come back, incomplete coverage, and is expensive. • Enzymes – Bacteria eat odor molecules/source material and typically convert to H2O. Extremely slow, not efficient, temperature sensitive, extremely expensive, and can’t ship during winter. • Ozone Generator – Oxidizer that can be very effective. Known carcinogen – very caustic, respiratory irritant, deteriorates and damages surfaces, building materials, rubber, latex. Ozone smell lingers. Can’t ship to California. • Peroxide Towers – Can be effective, hydrogen peroxide but are used in conjunction with Ozone generators. Treated spaces will smell like Ozone. Very time consuming and expensive. • Ionizer – Charged particle de-activates odor molecule, ozone is byproduct, very ineffective. Can’t ship to California. • Hydroxyl Generators – Extremely slow, but safe. Uses hydrogen molecules. Need to be used in high humidity environments like water damage. Not 100% effective can take weeks to mitigate the issue. • Carbon Filtration – Extremely slow but safe. Filters are expensive. Does not eliminate the source.
