Smurfit Kappa Seeking Net Zero Emissions By 2050
PPC Names Hunt (CONT’D FROM PAGE 12)
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to help grow and shape PPC,” Hunt said. “Our industry association is cru- cial not only for sharing technical knowledge but also for networking and connecting members from different back- grounds and generations.” Engaging the younger generation is Hunt’s third stra- tegic goal. According to Hunt, the industry must become more agile and inclusive with the younger generation. It will be crucial to bridge the gap between current and fu- ture industry leaders. Offering educational content focus- ing on emerging leaders as well as expanding the indus- try’s Student Design Challenge are ideal places to start. “Brian is a thoughtful leader, a consummate profession- al, and a great colleague,” said Ben Markens, President of PPC. “He served as Vice Chair for the past two years, so he’s already made an incredible impact on our association. I trust that his leadership will take us even further during his tenure as Chair.” Currently residing in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Hunthas held multiple leadership positions within his community, in- cluding various chamber groups, charitable organizations, and professional groups. He is the Leadership Council Chair for the Tennessee National Federation of Indepen- dent Businesses and serves on the Board for the Chatta- nooga Area Goodwill Industries. UK based Smurfit Kappa has set itself new targets to fur- ther reduce its fossil CO2 emissions, including its ambition to reach at least net zero emissions by 2050. It has also increased its existing intermediate 2030 CO2 reduction target by 15 percentage points to 55 percent, in compar- ison to the 2005 baseline. The company will have these targets validated by the Science Based Target initiative as being in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Before this announcement, the company had already achieved a reduction in CO2 emission intensity of 32.9 percent on its 2030 target of a 40 percent reduction. This achievement has resulted from the successful implemen- tation of key projects that form part of the company’s me- dium-term strategic plan. “We are proud to support the EU Green Deal objectives to reach net zero emissions by 2050,” said Tony Smurfit, Group CEO. “We have made good progress on our exist- ing targets and these new targets underline the organi- zation’s continued commitment to sustainability and to do better for the planet. Sustainability has been at the core of our business for decades, we want to lead from the front and raise the bar for the paper and packaging industry by setting such ambitious targets. This is a source of pride for all our customers and employees.”
