Michel Bellemare: New twist on the abstract 10353" * 5 r 130' * -& GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca “My mom was an elementary school teacher. She was always into having us do- ing crafts.”

Everyone knows what abstract art looks like, even if they do not always understand it. Rockland artist Michel Bellemare feels there should be a way tomake the abstract speak to anyone and that quest of artistic clarity is part of the driving force behind his works like “Blueprint” and “Eulogy”. “My work tends to be colourful,” Bel- lemare said, explaining the reasons why, as an artist, the field of abstract expressions holds the most fascination for him.

A lot of Bellemare’s later artistry as an adult developed out of those childhood drawing sessions with his mother’s encour- agement. “It always stuck withme. It’s always been sort of in the abstract (field). I’ve always loved to doodle.” His formal art training includes time spent under the influence of Canadian artist Peter Burke. Bellemare also holds a bachelor’s degree in cultural studies and a master’s in communications. They have combined with his artistic flair and talent into a quest to take the tenets of traditional abstract- expressionism and apply them to political commentary but in a way that makes the message behind his colourful works much more clear to the viewer. “Usually abstract art tends to be very cryptic and pointing to the (artist’s) inner self,” Bellemare said. “What I’m doing is flipping that on its head.” Instead of presenting a painting with a title and letting each and every person view- ing it try to relate the title to the abstract design, Bellemare has a particular social or political idea or issue in mind when he begins work, and tries to find an abstract design that gets that message across, with the help of the title. His method seems to be working, judging by the feedback he has received at some of his past shows. “Usually, at my shows, I tend to get asked a lot of questions about the title,” he said, adding that the questions are not the usual “what does the titlemean?” but more on how the title relates to the design itself. “It allows people to bemore involved with the art,” he noted. “They ask questions on the work and also on the issue itself.” Bellemare’s latest show at the Shenkman Centre in Orléans went on display not long before the tragic massacre of French politi- cal cartoonists with the magazine, Charlie Hebdo, by ISIS-backed terrorists in retali- ation for some of the satirical artwork and articles targeting the extremist group and

religious fundamentalism in the global Mus- lim community. While political cartoonists all over the world, including those of the Islamic faith, have retaliated with yet more satirical shots at ISIS and its fellow terrorist groups, Bellemare is pondering how and when this latest attack by would-be censors on art and political expression will filter into his own work. “At the moment, I’m letting the events sink in,” he said. “I’m still processing. Ulti- mately, I am on the side of free speech and expression.” In the end, he believes that ISIS and other like-minded groups and individuals will fail in their efforts to silence artists and writ- ers and anyone else who expresses views contrary to what others deem “correct” and “proper”. The pen or, in this case, the paint- brush will prove not just stronger than any sword, or assault rifle, or bomb, but more enduring and everlasting. “Art is a better way of expressing dissent than taking more extreme actions,” Bel- lemare said. “I see art as an essential means of creating dialogue.”

BUILDING SNOW TUNNELS AND FORTS NOTICE

Snow tunnels and forts can seem like a lot of fun, but they are extremely dangerous when built on the side of the roads. When clearing the snow from the streets, we push the snow banks back to make our roads more secured.
