YOUR FMB FMB INSPECTIONS

R egular inspections ensure FMB members maintain the high standards and best practice required of them. Here, the FMB answers your questions to ensure you’re prepared when your project is inspected.

How long does the inspection take?

Around 20-30 minutes depending on the complexity. We do not time- watch so if you have any questions regarding membership benefits your inspector will do their best to answer, or put you in contact with one of our membership advisors.

EXPECTING AN INSPECTION? The FMB set up its own inspections service this year, with a team of dedicated inspectors to enhance members’ experiences

What kind of work can be inspected?

We inspect most types of work, from a new build’s foundations to completion stages. Members’ work is varied so we tailor each assessment to the individual project, ensuring it is relevant,

proportionate and aligned with regulations and best practice.

I am building an extension, at what point would the inspector want to look at the work? Although foundations are the most crucial aspect of a building, we prefer to inspect larger projects – new builds, extensions, loft conversions – at an advanced stage where there is plenty of structural detail. We are happy to look through any photographs of the building work in its earlier stages as part of the inspection. Will the inspector assess the work against current building regulations? Any work that is carried out under a building regulations application will need to be assessed by your appointed building control officer; however, our inspectors apply their building regulation knowledge to all inspections. Who needs to be present? The FMB member or a representative of the organisation should be present. If possible, we would also like to pose questions to your client about their experience working with a Master Builder.

How should I prepare for the inspection?

They may ask you to explain how something was built or provide photographs of the work during construction. The online inspection will last 20-30 minutes. What if I need to cancel the inspection? Please give us 24-hours notice – otherwise last-minute cancellations may incur a cancellation charge. When will I be notified of the inspection result? We will email you a certificate upon a satisfactory result – usually at the end of the month. If I fail the inspection, will I be removed from membership? Not necessarily. We have procedures to follow and will provide guidance to support members and maintain standards.

Have relevant drawings, specifications, or certificates to hand and / or send them beforehand to inspections@fmb.org.uk – please quote your member number and date of planned inspection when sending your documents. You may need permission from your client for our inspector to attend – please check this is OK with them. We have no issues with friendly pets, but they should be supervised at all times. Most sites will be active working environments, but we expect it to be safe and tidy in accordance with CDM regulations. Are all inspections on-site? Because of geographical location and inspector availability, we sometimes conduct an online inspection. The advice still applies, including providing relevant

drawings and other documents. Ensure your phone or device is

Can I request a copy of the inspection report? Yes, to request your copy, please email membership@fmb.org.uk .

charged as your inspector will ask you to focus the device’s camera on particular items. A steady hand is needed.
